Let’s write down something more interesting than what I think about this song in this part. For example, what does “Mass of the Fermenting Dregs” stand for?
On a interview, the band claimed that “the name has no particular meaning, we just liked how it sounds”.
…I bet you expected more than this.
To me, “zureru” is a song about having so many thoughts racing up inside your mind that they end up resulting in a strange apparent apathy which isn’t in fact as simple as one may could think.

– “docchi datte ii sa” is “both are good”, but I liked “I don’t really mind” better as a translation for the whole theme of the song (the implied meaning doesn’t change). Of course, my translation is not (literally) the best choice, but again, I’m here to translate my feeling towards this song too, not only its words!

This song feels so depressing by reading its lyrics, but it’s not depressing at all in terms of music.
Typical of them, I like this contrast a lot and you may know it by now.
By the way, another thing that I’ve always liked about this band is the type of illustration featured in their album’s covers.
I actually never found out the name of the artist or if he/she has done something else aside from MotFD, but I’m really willing to see more by him/her because I really enjoy his/her style.

Back in May I’ve translated さんざめく by Mass of The Fermenting Dregs, and I feel like keeping on translating songs from that album.
So, there will be 5 posts about this album, the first being the one I translated in May, the second being this one (which is a double post) and the others coming soon on other different posts.

So, the first song from this post is the 3rd track from the album, 終わりのはじまり.
Not exactly the most original title (“the beginning of the end”, I mean…), but the song is surely something.
I really like the contrast between rhythm / lyrics. If you think about it, they’re pretty different, with the rhythm being energetic and the lyrics being not really that positive.
I really like when artists can do things like that, because it’s not something anyone can do without having it sounding dull.

Notes:

– I’ve left “I” as the subject of the first two stanzas. That “you” form is usually used when someone’s stating “let’s do X”, so it could also have been a plural, as in “we”, but I liked it that way more, because it delines better the contrast I was talking about before.

And the second song from this post is track n°2, “made, jounetsu mikkusu”.
It was initially featured in a promo E.P. by them, but made it out to this album in the end.
What I like about this band is that even if they’re under the shoegaze genre of music, they’re pretty different form your average shoegaze band’s sound.
I think that their style of music is someway more approachable by anyone than some other shoegaze bands such as Tokyo Shoegazers, Oeil, Tokenai Namae, CLAMs or even My Dead Girlfriend.
Mainly because they’re song are more oriented on the pop/rock side.
Anyway, another amazing thing is that they only use few instruments but they always sound great. Stunning soloes, amazing bass lines, outstanding drumtracks.
That’s simply it.

This song isn’t like anything else in the world.
There’s nothing that could get close to this song’s sound and vibe.
I just found it, and listening / reading to it was just like being hit by a sudden meteorite.
It has also already been translated, but I want to make this song mine anyways, so I’m translating it anew, with lyrics and all.
I don’t even know how to describe this song, but I assure you this is one of the most important posts I’ve ever wrote on foregroundnoises. Words won’t just help me this time.

I think that time is a spiral of things leaving marks here and there, but each time the spiral goes on the same place it went before, the mark gets weaker and dimmer.
That’s why I think one has to strike while the iron’s hot, as they say.
And now that I’m really into Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs I want to post more about them right now that I’m feeling them the most, basically.
There will be more posts by them, being their song pretty simple (lyric-wise) and not so time wasting. Of course I’m planning to post the other requests / doujin stuff too, but there’s no need to rush, right?
Short lyrics doesn’t mean inexpressive lyrics. One of the thing I like the most about this band is the space they give to the instrumental section and their lyrics, which aren’t really long but are really stunning.
But I guess that’s also part of my thoughts, being shoegaze one of the music genre I can relate the most to.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs – たんたんたん

I first translated a song by this band on 感激宴会 (kangeki enkai), but space, time, Atlantis whereabouts, ancient aliens and the Fermi’s paradox made me think about lots of things and stuff.
Like, “why should I have two blogs?” and “why should I have two blogs which are about the same thing?” and “why should I have two blogs which are about the same thing and the latter doesn’t get not even the 0,001% of my other more famous blog?”
So, yeah… I don’t intend to close kangeki enkai (mainly because it has been recognized by My Dead Girlfriend!), but I think I’ll make more kangeki-enkai-ish posts here rather than posting them on the other darker and more forgotten website.
After all, that’s music. And that’s music that I’m willing to share and translate.
Mass of the Fermenting Dregs— I’m in love with this band, so expect shitloads of post by them here and there.
We’re talking about Shoegaze, here. And as a bassist (or rather, as a guy who bought one 5 years ago and pretended to play it once in a while) I couldn’t avoid falling in love with their music style. That’s the type of music I’ve always wanted to play, and I wish someday I could do it (meaning, find the right people with the right music tastes to play, something that NEVER happened in the “bands” I’ve played in).
There are lots of songs I love from this band, and I’ll translate them occasionally (so checking this website won’t become obnoxious), but before getting to this song, I want to recommend one song by them that I won’t post again (because it has no lyrics).
The song name is エンドロール (Endroll) and it’s one of the most beautiful music pieces I’ve listened to in a while. Give it a shot and don’t be afraid of its almost 10 minutes lenght. It’s one of the instrumental songs that I love the most, and I want to share my love for it with whoever is reading this.
Today’s song is titled たんたんたん, and it’s one of their latest release. It’s way calmer than their other songs, but it has an amazing distorted guitar solo that is just… beyond words.
Music is meant to be listened and understood. Just by yourself.

I want to keep posting more songs from this band (though I also want to post others), because I think I ended up falling in love with them more than I thought I could.
I love today’s song even more than the other from the previous post, both in terms of music and lyrics. And it’s absolutely my favourite song by My Dead Girlfriend [2017 edit: it still is].
Let’s start with its title “watashi no aishita manatsu no shinigami” (My Beloved Midsummer God of Death). That alone was enough to charm me.
Summer itself it’s a pretty nostalic season in my mind. As I picture Summer, I always picture a twilight, and a reddening setting Sun which seems it could last forever, but never actually does.
That’s why the title caught my attention so much. Because it reminded me of my very own “Midsummer God of Death”.

I couldn’t find a picture that perfectly resembles what this song makes me feel, though. And I’m really sad about it.
I really care about this post, this song, my translation, everything on it.

Notes:

– Last stanza (last?) features a personal choice of mine. “yureru” (揺れる) means “to sway”, but of course it’s implying the movement of the hair while being rustled by the wind. Thus my translation. Because I love that kind of image and I know it’s what the song’s talking about. It would also felt kind of weird, otherwise.

My Dead Girlfriend – Conception For Three Forms Of Unhappiness At The State Of Existence

I guess today’s post is different from the others, a little bit more serious, and probably holds a bigger value than lots of previous ones.
I want to talk a bit about it, about music, about everything that makes my vision a little bit more clear.
I always separated japanese music from non-japanese music.
For some reason, I can’t easily say that I listen to some artists / bands and also to japanese ones. It’s just too strange to me, and I really don’t know why. Even though I listen more to non-japanese music, I love japanese music, whether it’s doujin, touhou, arranges, originals, whatever.
Then, I’ve found out about Shoegaze, a post-rock musical sub-genre.
There are lots of japanese shoegaze bands that I’ve listened to until now.
Finding out about shoegaze and similar post-rock styles of music opened up a new world before my very eyes.
The barrier between japanese and non japanese music suddenly crumbled for a while. I think japanese shoegaze was the music genre I was unconsciously searching for a long time.
That’ why today’s post is a special one. Because rather than the song itself, it’s about a genre, about music, about a new look to the same world.
But of course it’s also a translation post, being this blog about them, at least on a foreground side.
I can’t do anything more than suggesting you bands like My Dead Girlfriend, Shoujoskip, Tokyo Shoegazer, Clams, She Her Her Hers, Asobi Sex, Parasol, and lots more…
I wish I could make posts like this one, introducing to you more songs, artist, band and styles of this genre, but the sad thing is that the lyrics are pretty damn impossible to find.
So, if I happen to find some, expect more shoegaze-focused posts like this.
I think this style of music reflects my style / ideals / vision of the world more than touhou arranges / doujin music does, that’s why I want to give it more space on my wordpress.
And that’s why it’s so important to me. I couldn’t care less about becoming someone online.
But if I have to write about something, I’d like to write more about what really matters to me. Or better, to the one behind Shion, behind Foreground Noises, behind everything else.
Let’s get to the song, Conception For Three Forms Of Unhappiness At The State Of Existence (kind of a long title, huh?).
It’s not the song I love the most from My Dead Girlfriend (those could may be Watashi no Aishita Manatsu no Shinigami, Sweet Days and Her Last Kiss or Nou ni Tokeru Asobi etc etc…), and I don’t even think that’s the most appropriate song to act as a symbol for japanese shoegaze, but I like it a lot anyways, and I was lucky enough to find its lyrics online.
I don’t think these lyrics are about a suicide. Or better, not an actual one.
I can totally see a love story filled with gaps they couldn’t fill, something the person talking in the lyrics maybe didn’t want, but now can’t stop thinking about.
As if he/she finally understood the value of something he/she had right after he/she lost it.
While the other… jumped down. To his/her own life. Towards his/her own choices that, maybe, lead him/her into someone else.
Songs like that can only come out from the cracks of a broken heart. That’s what makes it really beautiful.
That’s probably why I can feel it all very close to me.
I hope someone will spend some minutes to read this and to listen to this song and others.
I think that’s the beginning of a new type of posts.
It’s a matter of lyrics after all. Expect more posts like that in the future. From the same band too (foreshadowing next post?).
