My Dead Girlfriend – Aki no Hachiouji

It’s been a while since I wrote something in this free space before getting to the lyrics.
That’s because I actually have something to say about this post.
I’ve sent some e-mails to a few japanese bands asking them if am I allowed to post their lyrics / if they would sent me the ones I’m missing, and My Dead Girlfriend‘s frontman, ishikawa himself, replied more than once to my e-mails.
He kindly sent me the lyrics for today’s post, Aki no Hachiouji (which I wanted to post in Autumn, but screw that, I can’t wait) and also fixed my ear-transcription for Kinoshita Fuyou I made some time ago.
He’s aware of my translations and seem to appreciate my work, and being a huge fan of him and his band, I’m going crazy about all of what’s happening.
It may be something simple, but it’s incredible, and I have no words to express my gratitude for them.
And that happened because I told myself “fuck it, let’s try to e-mail them, doesn’t matter if I get no reply”.
So… why isn’t it better to try do something instead of overthinking the worst outcome without doing anything at all?
Lastly, few words for ishikawa-san (I know he’ll read this!):
もう一度言いますが、歌詞を翻訳させてくれて本当にありがとうございます!
これからも素敵な曲を作り続けてください!新しいアルバムを楽しみにしていますから。
よろしくお願いします!

My Dead Girlfriend – Aki no Hachiouji

hitorikiri no kaerimichi
kimi o omoidasu
moshimo ano ko ga shindara
boku wa kanashimu kana

Alone on my way back home
I’m remembering you
And I wonder if I’d be sad
If that girl would have died

hitorikiri de okiru gogo
kimi o omoidasu
tatoeba boku ga shindara
ano ko wa kanashimu kana

Waking up alone in the afternoon
I’m remembering you
And I wonder if she would be sad
If, for example, I’d be dead

hitorikiri no kaerimichi
kimi o omoidasu
boku no koto waratteta
baka ni shite waratteta

I’m remembering you
Alone on my way back home
You were laughing to me
You were laughing making fun of me

hakanasa de

In temporariness

yuudachi nureru ano ko
kimi to ita aki no Hachiouji
yureru kimi no kami to
ashioto ga boku o oiteyuku

That girl, soaking wet under the evening shower
In the autumnal Hachiouji I was in with you –
Your hair rustling in the air
And your footsteps running after me…

My Dead Girlfriend – Ouka

My Dead Girlfriend – Ouka

zutto mae kara miteita kimi o
kobaruto-iro no fuku o kiteiru

I’ve always been watching you
Wearing that cobalt-blue dress

chikku takku ugoku hari
chitte yuku ashita
hikouki-gumo to kiete yuku

Tick tock, the clockhand is moving
Tomorrow’s scattering all over
Disappearing together with vapor trails

mou ichido kimi ni aitai
kono basho de matteiru kara

I want to meet you, one more time
That’s why I’m waiting in this place

kimeru mae kara kimeteita koto
saigo no toki o matteita

This was something that had been decided before we could
So I’ve been waiting for this last time

shiroi kaidan noborenai

And I can’t seem to walk up the white stairs
Appeared in this beautiful, never seen before sky

mou ichido kimi ni aitai
kono basho de matteiru kara

I want to meet you, one more time
That’s why I’m waiting in this place

kuri kaesu omoide no anata wa itsumo utsukushii
furi kaeru omoide wa keshite iroaseru koto wa nai

These memories have been repeating, and you’re always beautiful
These memories I’ve turned my back on will never fade away

Notes:

– Lyrics transcribed by ear by youtube user There’s no 100% guarantee they’re right, but they most likely are.
– On the provided lyrics, the fourth to last stanza was “zutto mae kara”, like one of the previous ones, but instead of “zutto”, I keep on hearing “kimeru”, so I’ve changed it accordingly. The meaning doesn’t change much: if “zutto”, then it is “something that has been decided a long time ago”, if “kimeru” it is “something that has been decided before we could decide it ourselves”. Doesn’t change that much.

My Dead Girlfriend – Nasty Mayor’s Daughter

My Dead Girlfriend – Nasty Mayor’s Daughter

ijiwaru na chouchou no musume wa
boku no kata ni te o kakenagara waratteita

The malicious daughter of the Mayor
Was smiling while placing her hands over me

kimi ga mita isshun ni
yoru no tsuinpiikusu kiete yuku

The moment you saw that
The nighttime Twin Peaks started fading away

ano ko shinda natsu no gozen hachiji sanpun
puurusaido koshi kake nagara matteta no ni

That girl died in a summer evening at 8:03 P.M.
Even though I was waiting for her, sitting over the poolside

kimi ga mita isshun ni
yoru no tsuinpiikusu kiete yuku

The moment you saw that
The nighttime Twin Peaks started fading away

And even tonight, he’s smiling at me with a malicious face;
The malicious mayor is smiling

Notes:

– Lyrics transcribed by ear by youtube user There’s no 100% guarantee they’re right, but they most likely are.
– As you can see, like most of My Dead Girlfriend’s songs, the lyrics are about the usual topics and shares lots of common words appearing in almost every other song by them (“ano ko ga shinda”, “puurusaido”, “waratteiru”…)
– Even though the name of the song is based off “ijiwaru na chouchou no musume” appearing in the first stanza and on, I’ve decided to translate “ijiwaru” as “malicious” rather than “nasty”, because I liked it more and its meaning is closer to “ijiwaru” in terms of “unkindness” rather than the “gross” meaning associated with the word “nasty”.
– The “ツインピークス” on the second stanza refers to Twin Peaks, a popular 90’s horror / mystery drama (its third season is airing this year). I guess in this song is a metaphor for “strangeness”, “aberration”, “mystery”.

My Dead Girlfriend – Skyscraper Kills My Ghost In Your Memory

ushiro kara tori tsuite
mizube kara tobi orite

You grappled me from my back
And jumped off with me from waterfront

karamatteru no wa kimi to doukyuusei no wa
karamette nasai
ima kara

Who’s involved with you is a classmate of yours
So just let it be
From now on

yureru karada ukabu shikai
kimi to ano ko no terepashii
itsuka subete ga kieru nara
kimi ni ai ni ikanakucha

A shaking body, a floating corpse
If all of this telepathy between you and that girl
One day will fade away
Then I just have to go meet you

yureru karada ukabu shikai
kimi to ano ko no terepashii
itsuka subete ga kieru kedo
futari dake no himitsu da yo

A shaking body, a floating corpse
If all of this telepathy between you and that girl
One day will fade away
Then this will be our shared secret

Notes:

– Lyrics transcribed by ear by youtube user There’s no 100% guarantee they’re right, but they most likely are.
– The first stanza is repeated throughout the whole song several times. Same goes for the last stanza.
– On 木下芙蓉 there’s a 視界 (shikai, point of view) instead of 死体 (shitai, corpse). I’m guessing is the latter, being that every song by them seems to talk about corpses and it kind of became a trademark for their lyrics. Also, i hear “shitai” over “shikai”. Same goes for “NASA”. It made sense to me, but could also be -nasai, a polite form showing a command. I modified it for this translation on foregroundnoises. Lastly, “wa” in the second stanza is wrote with the kanji for “ring” (輪) in his transcription, I choosed to make it a simple “wa”, marking the subject. An alternate translation following 木下芙蓉’s untouched ear-copied lyrics is available on my second wordpress, kangeki enkai 感激宴会.

– Also, the same user provided me the lyrics for this and the previous two posts (Fuyu no Hachiouji & A Swimming Squid in the Swimming Pool) when I asked him to, so I wanted to thank him again for his work and kindness.
For now, the missing lyrics songs I’ve yet to translate from My Dead Girlfriend‘s discography (the ones I’ve not yet translated / posted on foregroundnoises or kangeki enkai), are still nowhere to be found. The song I’m still missing are:
Sumo (from 2 Songs + Cassette Tape EP/ 6 Songs from the Happy Valley)
We Eat In The Subway And Pass Over His Comment In Silence (from Sweet Days And Her Last Kiss)
Skyscraper Kills My Ghost In Your Memory [], Nasty Mayor’s Daughter [], 桜花 (Ouka) [] & Aki no Hachiouji (from Underdrawing For Three Forms Of Unhappiness At The State Of Existence).
Of course I plan to translate them as well, but I’m still missing the lyrics. That at least to this day when I wrote this up. Maybe you’ll be reading this when I’ll have the lyrics for all those songs already translated, who knows!
Still, if you happen to have lyrics for this song, please, send them to me: I’d really appreciate.

Notes:

– On the first stanza, “kaeru” (蛙, “frog”) may be also refer to the verb “kaeru” (帰る, “to go back home”) as a wordplay.
– I’ve found the lyrics online, and while I’m sure they’re right, they’re not from any booklet, so there’s no 100% guarantee they’re flawless. I haven’t transcribed these lyrics by ear myself.
– The english sections are repeated more than once throughout each stanza they appear in.

My Dead Girlfriend – Kinoshita Fuyou

[27/08/2017 POST UPDATE]
I have an important news for this song’s lyrics. I previously made two ear-copy versions of it, but after I came in contact via mail with My Dead Girlfriend’s vocalist Ishikawa, he kindly read my ear-copy and mailed me the actual lyrics of it.
Most of the words were correct, but there are some parts I completely mistook (naiteiru yo -> daijoyuu / boku wa dere egao -> boku datte egao / barabarashita -> barabara shitai).
Not much changed and the translation itself didn’t suffer that much of a change in terms of meaning, but I’m really glad they decided to fix this post for me, it shows they’re willing to support translations and worldwide spreading of their music, and I really, really appreciate that.
So I’d like to thank the band and Ishikawa himself for his kindness and support, I’ll always support them and their works!
PS: the video still features the old (and wrong-transcribed) lyrics, but I’ll make a note about them on its description / notes.
PPS: he also sent me some more lyrics..!

My Dead Girlfriend – Kinoshita Fuyou

daijoyuu Kinoshita Fuyou
kimi ga mune ni sashita toge ga
nukenaide shibireteiru
zutto kono mama de itakatta

You’re a great actress, Kinoshita Fuyou
You won’t take off the thorn piercing your heart,
It has paralyzed you
And you just want to stay this way forever

daijoyuu Kinoshita Fuyou
kimi ga mune ni sashita toge ga
sukoshi zutsu usurete yuku
yuka ni ochiru kimi no migite

You’re a great actress, Kinoshita Fuyou
The thorn piercing your heart
Is gradually becoming dimmer and dimmer
As your right hand falls down on the floor

sutekina kanchigai datte
kimi wa waratteiru
sutekina kanchigai dakara
boku datte egao

What a lovely misunderstanding,
It got you smiling!
And because of such lovely misunderstanding
I’m smiling too

sutekina kanchigai datte
kimi wa waratteiru
sutekina kanchigai dakara
boku datte egao

What a lovely misunderstanding,
It got you smiling!
And because of such lovely misunderstanding
I’m smiling too

sutekina kanchigai datte
kimi wa waratte itta
sutekina kanchigai
soshite kimi no barabara shitai

“What a lovely misunderstanding”
– You said, smiling
A lovely misunderstanding
And then, your corpse in pieces

Notes:

– First of all, just as I did for Sweet Days and Her Last Kiss, this aren’t the official lyrics for this song, I haven’t copied them online (which is something I never do, by the way) or transcribed from a booklet. I simply wrote down what I could hear. It took me a lot of time and lots of different videos (original song, lives, karaokes…) to figure out each stanza’s most accurate meaning. While I’m not 100% sure about anything, I think the outcome is pretty good. If I’ll find some erorrs (or if you will), I’ll just fix this post like I did for the other one.
– First note is about the very first word, “泣いている”, which is probably the world I’m the most unsure about. No matter the version of this song I’ve listened to, it was always so difficult to grasp its meaning. A tweet from this user made my mind a bit clearer, even if he/she too is not really sure about it(聴き取れない = “I can’t understand very well”). That’s of course because of the soft, background-blending vocals which aren’t clear enough.

– Now, about “Kinoshita Fuyou”. I think the whole song plays a pun over the word “Fuyou” which could also mean “unnecessary”, “unneeded”, but that’s probably a pun that Edogawa Ranpo thought himself. Kinoshita Fuyou is, in fact, a character appearing in the short novel “Mushi” by Edogara Ranpo. While I couldn’t read the novel, I managed to find some notes about it on Wikipedia. Kinoshita Fuyou is one of the main three characters of this short novel, as well as the victim, killed out of jealousy by a childhood friend whose true feelings for her (already in love with another man) got refused with a harsh laugh of her. He was still in love with her, and tried to move her corpse away to keep it clean and beautiful, but things didn’t go as well as planned, so the corpse starts rotting… That’s the summary of the summary of the summary.
– Giving that, most of the sentences from this song seems to be more from the killer than the victim, if the song itself is based off this novel. Or probably, “Kinoshita Fuyou” serves as a reference, while the rest of the song is just unrelated to anything else concerning the song. You can check an alternate translation on my second wordpress, 感激宴会 ~ Kangeki Enkai.
– Third/Fourth stanza, “dere-egao” is another doubt. It may be just “dere-gao”, which has the same meaning, or something else I couldn’t grasp. I’m pretty sure about either “dere-egao” or “dere-gao”, though.
– Last stanza, “barabara” means “to scatter”, but could also mean “to tore something into pieces”. I could clearly hear “to” in the live version, so I kept that, but it could also be “wo”. If that’s the case, than it’s probably more correct to say “cut into pieces” rather than “to scatter” / “to part away from”.
