Gaki no Tsukai translations: Info, FAQs & Everything else

[DUE COPYRIGHT ISSUES WITH MY CHANNEL, THIS POST’S CONTENT ARE NO LONGER VALID (AT LEAST FOR NOW)]

gakinotsukai

First of all: That’s not a translation post / a post related to japanese music whatsoever.
As someone who follows my blog or my youtube page already knows, I’m translating Gaki no Tsukai clips by years.
What is Gaki no Tsukai? I’m not wasting any time explaining that, just google it and you won’t regret it.
So, what’s this post about? Let’s try to explain.

Fansubbing & Encoding

I started fansubbing 2-3 years ago for fun and I noticed that people actually watched my translated videos and enjoyed them a lot, and that’s amazing.
I learned by myself how to add subtitles, how to set the “right” timing and how to encode everything at the end, but it was annoying the first time and annoying even today.
I won’t lie if I say that the most difficult thing about fansubbing is timing the subtitles instead of translating what the guys in the videos are saying.
I struggled a bit, but I managed to upload a bunch of subbed clips on my channel, and eventually I got over 1000 subscribers (which is a lot to me, considering how this started so suddenly and without no one helping me).
And I’m not considering quitting. I love Gaki no Tsukai and I love to spread some new clips to gaki fans who can’t speak or understand japanese.
Oh, by the way, I helped translating 1 hour of the Earth Defense Force Batsu Game with Team Gaki, but on my youtube channel (due copyright issues / complaining and sh*t) I only upload short clips of Gaki.
Anyway, while I’d like to keep translating and having a frequent upload pace, life is life and a lot of stuff comes in the way.
I’m graduating this year and I’m studying a lot in order to be able to do so… And than there’s this blog’s translations (which don’t take me much time as timing subtitles does…), books to read, friends to meet, graduation thesis to write, concerts to perform with my band, hobbies and stuff that leaves me only a few spare time that I don’t like to spend doing something I don’t like to do.
And while I like translating, I DON’T like timing.

Timing

“There’s the rub”, would write Shakespeare.
Truth is, I suck at timing subtitles, and I usually spend more than 2 hours for just a 1 minute clip. That’s crazy and tires me up to death.
I recently uploaded a short clip just as a sign, like “Hey guys, I’m not dead yet, but, y’know, I suck at timing subtitles and I won’t fucking stand a clip longer than a minute, I’m sorry”.
But hey! I’m doing this for free! I don’t want to die timing!
On another clip (and on this blog) I wrote about the fact that I’m looking for someone to help me timing my clips.
Read HERE for more, but let me explain it further. (CLICK HERE TO READ)
I don’t think I’m able to be the leader of a fansub group (as much as I wish to be one), having tons of stuff to do.
That’s why this project is not a “fansub team” project, but just clips uploaded on my channel, by me.
My channel grew a lot and I think it can grow more, so it will be a shame to leave it as it is by now.
If you’re good at timing subtitle and want to help me spreading Gaki no Tsukai, just let me know!
Just read the other post I linked before to read the instructions. You’ll be credited, so don’t worry!

FAQ

Q: Why are those clips so short?
A: Mainly because of two reasons. First of all, if youtube notices that a full episode is uploaded, the chances that it’ll get removed will be higher than a short one. Second, because, as I stated before, I suck at timing and I really hate doing it, so I stick to short clips so I can upload without spending a year timing the subtitles and losing my hair due nervousness.

Q: What’s wrong with the videos’ quality?
A: Yeah, uhm, again, two reasons. First, just like before, higher quality means that the clip is more easy to be found and more similar to the clip aired on television. Just so you know, subtitling and uploading isn’t actually something that should be encouraged, but we’re fan and we’re doing what fans do! …But youtube doesn’t like this, so if it finds out I uploaded a HQ rip from a japanese tv show, he fucks me up.
Second reason is… I don’t know. I mean, I try my best trying to keep my video quality not high but not so low either. Usually I try to keep it between 360p and 480p (which is medium-low), but somehow during the upload process something always goes wrong and yeah… quality drops to 240p and sometimes to 144p.
I don’t really know, I’m technologically retarded.

Q: Will you translate the full episode from where this clip comes from?
A: Uh… it depends. If the full episode is around 20 minutes, not HQ and (most important) already timed/typesetted by someone else, yeah, I’d love to! If that’s not the case… I’m sorry, I won’t.

Q: From which episode does this clip come from?
A: Most of the time you just have to read the description to answer that question. But sometimes I don’t know. I just happen to find on the internet some clips that catch my attention and I start translating them without knowing what they are or where they come from.

Q: Will you translate X?
A: Will you typeset/time X for me?

Projects

There are actually lots of project I planned working at, but couldn’t because the clips were long and I couldn’t stand timing 24 friggin’ minutes of japanese people talking.
I just… I can’t time subtitles. I’m sorry.
Here are some of the clips that I planned subbing, and I still am.
So, if you’re interested in lending me a hand, you can already start timing / typesetting the subs (.ass files) and send them to me!
– ガキの使い おもしろ廊下歩きコンテスト (Gaki no Tsukai – Funny Corridor Walking Contest)
– ガキの使い 藤原の500のコト (Gaki no Tsukai – 500 Things About Fujiwara)
– ガキの使い 松本 挑戦 (Gaki no Tsukai – Matsumoto Challenge) (EVERY UNSUBBED EPISODE)
– キキシリーズ (Kiki Series) (EVERY UNSUBBED EPISODE)
– ガキの使い コスプレバスツアー (Gaki no Tsukai – Cosplay Bus Tour) (EVERY UNSUBBED EPISODE)
– ガキの使い 七変化 (Gaki no Tsukai – ShichiHenge) (EVERY UNSUBBED EPISODE)
Obviously those are only few of the clips I’d like to translate.
If you’re willing to help me, you also get the right to choose which Gaki clip (not only those listed here) we should work to.

There’s really nothing else to add.
Once again, to get a clearer picture read HERE.
Hope you’ll help me, let’s work together!
I actually found someone who wanted to help me, but one has disappeared and the other… I don’t remember. Truth is, I’m still searching for helpers, and I’d love to work with you, and you, and you too!

Contacts

Here’s a tutorial to how to contact me (people always find istructions VERY hard).

Prerequisites:
– Being able to read
– Being able to read and understand
– Being able to read and understand and read once more so you’re really sure you understood what you just read

Nice! Now, if you fullfil the prerequisites, here’s how you can contact me (which, obviously, means everything else that’s not wrote down here is not a valid method):
– via mail: write me an e-mail to m_baratta@hotmail.it adress.
– via Twitter: send me a tweet / PM to @FGRNDNoises.
– via Facebook: send a message my account.
– via Skype: add flakyz2 to your contacts.
– Simply comment this post.

You can ask me everything you want in the mail / messages. We’ll talk about what to do and decide together which clip we should start to work to. Lending me a hand doesn’t mean being bounded to my translations. In other words, you’re not obliged to keep typesetting for me! You can also typeset a clip and then get the f*ck back to your home planet far far away in the galaxy! That’s totally cool!
You’re basically help me when you want to: I can’t force you to continue or to do what I want to do.
I hope this post doesn’t sound stupid / pretentious, but I’m really looking forward to working with other Gaki fans who share my passion.
Let’s keep subbing and spreading the love!

And keep an eye to my channel: マウロ (Shion)
(this post was created in order to put it under my videos descriptions AKA those things that no one ever reads)

Downtown Talk: What happens when you die?

Translator’s Notes

I know, I know.
It’s been a long time and I come back with a low-quality, short and kinda pointless video.
My bad.
But don’t you want to know the secrets of life and death that Matsumoto knows and shares with the world?
On a side now, that’s probably my lousiest video ever.
I don’t even know what that chime-like sound is.
Forgive me.
I decided to upload it anyway just to say “Hey, I’m still alive!”
By the way, there are high chances that I’ll work on the translation of this year Batsu Game, and of course I won’t stop upload here on youtube.
Also, on a side note, I deleted my previous twitter account, because I didn’t like how I was using it.
I’ve made a new one, though, in which I’ll display only news and few tweets.
If you don’t want to miss any update, be sure to follow me!
And of course, subscribe to my channel here, because more is yet to come!
See you next video!!

Gaki no Tsukai members first contact with Pepper robot

Translator’s Notes

After 2 months of nothingness I’m back with a clip so short you’ll have to watch like 10 times to feel satisfied. Totally not worth the wait!
But hey, that’s better than nothing, I guess.
This clip is from a recent footage (September 2014, I guess).
As Tanaka reads a fan letter who writes about a famous talking robot in a shopping disctrict, Gaki no Tsukai’s member curiosity keeps growing. Surprise is that the staff actually brought Pepper, the intelligent robot they’re reading about, to the stage!
What will happen when Pepper tries to have a conversation with the legendary super-sadist Hamada?
Definetely worth the manzai!
I’m sorry the clip is so short, it’s getting difficult for me to keep the pace.
But I promise I won’t stop subbing, even if it comes to be a once-in-a-while thing.
So, just in case, be sure to be subscribed, because new stuff can pop out when you less expect it to!
Oh yeah, take a look at their Obaachan t-shirts. I fucking love them. I should probably order a dozen of those.
And please, don’t ask me why they’re wearing animal costumes. I haven’t watched the full episode, so I have no idea what the context was.

Cocorico Presents: Chilly-Chilly Lameness Contest (Gaki no Tsukai)

Translator’s Notes

Are you feeling the hotness of summer?
If so, than this clip will be perfect to cool yourself down a bit!
You know, lame jokes can help you feel refreshed…
That’s a clip from 1999 (I guess), so it’s pretty old, but I liked how we get to see lots of Gaki staff in it.
I personally loved how they totally screwed up the score system, and even though lame skits are supposed to be rated high, sometime you’ll see skits they said were lame scoring up to 8 points.
Don’t know, but I found that hilarious too.
Also, there are several notes on the video, and I’m sorry to have added so many in it.
Giving that some skits are also based on puns, it was necessary to change the subtitles in order to preserve the jokes. Expecially the last one, when the Sabu-sabu king mispronounce his line, I totally arranged it anew. He was spouting nonsense, anyway, the funny thing was just that he wasn’t able to say what he wanted to say.
I’m also sorry, near the end, there’s a short line that I wasn’t able to understand at all.
Yeah, overall I’m not so very satisfied on this clip, due its difficulty, its fast lines and its number of puns… but anyway I wanted to release a new clip ASAP, giving that I’m working on this since June and no clips were uploaded since.
So, I’m sorry for the few mistakes and the bad work with the notes / pun arranges, but I hope you’ll enjoy it anyway!

Tsukitei Rap Battle vs Greengrocer (Gaki no Tsukai short clip)

Translator’s notes

Our hero… has been defeated. Once again.
A short clip from a recent footage of Gaki no Tsukai, in which our former Yamazaki (now Tsukitei Housei) challenges pedestrians in fierce rap battles.
We already know his abilities in making music, but is rap one of his strong point too?
I loved how his opponent is just an ordinary greengrocer, and still has a sharper tongue and more accurate sense of rhythm than Housei has.
Man, that was good.
Just for info, I won’t release long clips on my channel (15 minutes is my limit).
So I won’t translate the rest of it unless Team Gaki decides to work on it on their website!
BUT..! I’ll release clip more often than before, so while I’m working on bigger clips, there will be times when short clips like that will be uploaded.
..BUT! I need your help. Help my channel grow! More support from you guys, more clips, more frequently!
As someone asked me, I don’t have a facebook page in which I write video updates… but I have a twitter profile, you can follow me there if you want.
And obviously, as always, I do not own any copyright. I just subbed the clip.

(Gaki no Tsukai) – Earthquake during Downtown talk

Translator’s Notes

A new (short) video for everyone!
This time, a special clip from a recent footage.
The time where an earthquake strike during downtown talk.
Though I’d loved to hear something new about superman’s S symbol, I also loved how they reacted to it.
They kept their cool, keeping on entertaining the audience and bringing laughter to everyone.
I guess that’s what makes someone a comedian!
There were some parts that I didn’t get very well, but this time my doubts are just a few. For example, the first thing they both said.
I know they’re talking about reading letters, but I couldn’t get exactly what they were saying. Just forgive this little part, everything else should be perfectly fine (I guess).
But once again, pointing me out some big losses on my translation helps me out a lot for improving my japanese understanding skills, so don’t hesitate and let me know if I misheard something!
Last thing, I’m sorry this clip was short, but I wanted to sub it because it’s a nice thing to see, in my opinion.
I really love downtown, geez.
I also plan on releasing subbed clips more frequently from last clip on, at least 1 in a month (or even more than one).
But right now, 1 in a month is fine and enough, considering I’m soon going to start my exams sessions and I won’t have much time to spend on clips like those.
Anyway, subscribe and stay tuned, I’ll write everything on my twitter for news and I’ll upload everything there on this channel! thanks!

(Gaki no Tsukai) Hamada Volleyball Coach

I decided to start posting once again on my wordpress, though I’ll have some changes.
First of all: It will be a translation-only wordpress, like my first one was (and now I can truly say that I became better at translating).
I’ll post the last episode which I uploaded on my channel from Gaki no Tsukai, and something new is coming next…

TRANSLATOR’S NOTES

Welcome to my lousiest video ever! (Or not so much, considering youtube kept the 480p!)
Yeah, can’t help it. Its quality is low but it was the best I found. Moreover, its audio is very bad too, so bad that I couldn’t even get every single line they’re saying. Sometimes It’s very noisy and they also talk with such a small voice that there are probably several mistakes.
But yeah, I’m not dead! And this time the clip I’m uploading is even longer than usual! Isn’t this great?
Sadly, exams and studying (and troubles that keeps happening) are getting on my way a lot recently, that’s why there weren’t upload from recently. But I kinda find my own way to spare some time for my channel project, so yeah, that’s it!
I’m not going to quit subbing, and once in a while new clips will be uploaded here, so be sure to be subscribed!
About this video… Awesome.
I love how Japanese people acts so normally when they’re actually in a fake situation.
I also laughed so much at how Hamada turns out to be half demon and half angel, that was brilliant.
On a side note, I didn’t get the “mama” thing. I’m sorry. I tried to find something on Google, but nothing answered my questions. I’m guessing they’re mocking how Hamada is acting like a mentor to them, in a parental way.
And Etou… Poor Etou.
Once again, I’m sorry the quality is too low, but I couldn’t find anything better. If you know where to find this clip in a higher quality, let me know! I still have every .ass file, so adding the subs would be the easiest thing.
Now, some news: I changed my twitter account name (now goes on @0daruma), for everyone who’s following me, and I also left behind my wordpress, for now.
I’ll probably open a new blog or whatever when I have some spare time and will to do it… oh, well.
Oh, and lastly: I managed to became part of Team Gaki! Have you watched 2014 Earth Defense Force Batsu Game? I worked with them on the translation! (Yeah, I’m that “Scion” on the credits… except for the fact that they misspelled “Shion”). Also, I’m signing with my true name starting from this video (Mauro), so I won’t be just a Shion among Shions.
Am I right?
No, probably I’m just an idiot.
I hope this idiot I am at least will be able to entertain you!

Yamazaki’s Produce ft. Haruna Ai

And I’m back with a new Gaki no Tsukai clip! I’m sorry for not releasing anything in the last weeks, but you know, I don’t have much time for it: lots of study, place to visit, people to meet… that’s basically how things go on once you are an university student! And yeah, I know there are several clips I promised I’m going to sub, don’t worry, I haven’t forgot them. It’s just that they’re currently being analyzed and subbed, but I don’t know how much time it will get for me to finish them. What can I say for sure, is that before the end of 2013, a new Gaki no Tsukai clip will be uploaded (sadly a short one). But I’m not giving up! I’ll keep on uploading stuff, I promise!
Enough talk, let’s talk about this episode. The “Yamazaki’s Produce” serie, is based on the musical genius of Yamazaki, who writes up some masterpiece which are obviously going to be performed by the member of Gaki no Tsukai! In this episode, Cocorico performs the last song written by Yamazaki, together with Haruna Ai, which is… a… transexual? A tranny singer, or that’s what I’ve found out about her. Pretty cute, though. I don’t mean to be mean (sorry for the pun) to anyone, I was just shocked once I found out that that (omg another pun) cute girl was not completely a girl. Aaanyway, the song is something… what. I don’t know. It’s creepy as f*ck. Haruna can sing and dance very well, the other two… are creepy enough.
Some things I wanted to point out:
– Some pieces (especially when the speaker is talking) are not really clear for me, though I managed to get the meaning of what was he saying). Not my fault, he talks way too f*cking fast for my ears.
– When they’re singing, I couldn’t understand very well what the Gaki no Tsukai members are saying about the performance (’cause there’s a lot of noise), but I keep hearing things like “what the hell” or “creepy”, so you can easily figure out what they are about to say.
– This seems to be part of a longer video which, sadly, I couldn’t find out fully downloadable. Anyway, about this, I want you to know that there are only clips on my channel. I work alone and I’m not so brave enough to sub full episodes. I don’t think you’ll find 24 minutes long episode subbed on my channel (for now, at least).
Lastly, I want to give you guys a present: Lyrics in kanji/romaji and translation of the song! Here you go.
Kanji:

Romaji:
hora asoko ni mieteiru no wa
watashi no hoshi sou futago za yo
kono hiroi uchuu no naka de hitoki wa kirameiteru
anata to hajimete kisushita shunkan ni
watashi no karada no uchuu ga hajiketa no
yunikoon ni mata gari anata no hoshi made
kakete nukete iku wa ryuusei no you ni
mada dame sugu matteite ne
aa kani za ni jama sarete yoko o surinuke
anata no hoshi oushi za he hitottobi
sugu sugu sugu kaketeiku wa
zutto zutto zutto matteite ne

Translation:
Look! What can you see over there
Is my star, yes, the Gemini
Which is sparkling flashy in this vast space
At the moment of my first kiss with you
The universe in my body bursted open
An unicorn crosses the way to your star
Running through it, just like a meteor
Not yet! That’s Bad! Immediately! Wait for me, okay?
Aah, it got in the way of the Cancer and slipped to its side
Your star continues its fly towards the Taurus
Right now, right now, right now it will go over it
I’ll always, always, always wait, you know?

See you next video!!

Cocorico Tanaka’s Shichi-Henge

Translator’s Notes

Here we are again, with another old great Gaki no Tsukai clip! As many of you may already know, the “schichi-henge” serie (literally: “Seven Transformations”) consists by performing seven characters, attempting to make everyone laugh. More people laugh, more money the person in charge will earn. Apparently, the money were donated to some kind of charity association, I’m pretty sure is named Kobato (小鳩) or something, but since I wasn’t sure how to translate the full name (and if it even actually exists), I prefered to leave it unnamed. I think it was the best choice-
I seriously didn’t expect Tanaka to reach the top. I always saw Tanaka as the serious-type, but it seems that when it comes to act like a comedian he can do his job greatly.
There are some parts in the video were everyone is muttering constantly, and I really can’t understand due the low audio quality. However, most of them are things like “Sou desu ka?” or “Sou desu yo ne…” …In english, they’re nothing but backchannels, meaning sentence said for expressing approval / interest in the conversation.
Also, some sentences were arranged a little bit, but their meaning was not modified that much. I’m sorry, but sometimes the audio is so bad not all the words can be understood!
I’m also sorry for (possible) mistakes/mispells, if there are any.
I hope you enjoyed this clip, and stay tuned: New Gaki no Tsukai clips are coming soon, as well as some other subbed clips from Japan that you might-or-might-not enjoy :’D

Yamazaki’s Ass-Magic

Translator’s Notes

(forgive me for the 240p quality… something went wrong during the upload!)
And… here I am again, with another Gaki no Tsukai clips.
As you can see by Matsumoto’s hair, the clip is quite old (Just look at how young Yamazaki is!).
I found it funny and wanted to sub it, though I don’t know if youtube will let me keep this video uploaded… Oh well.
Anyway, I’m already working on other clips.
As some of you may know, I also started subbing “Funny Corridor Walking Contest”, but sadly it’s taking me a lot of time, due its lenght and some lines I can’t totally hear well.
I’m positive I’ll eventually release it, part 1 is already half-translated/subbed!
I’m also working on other unsubbed clips that I don’t want to spoil around… I’ll just say it’s a Shichi-Henge untranslated clip.
Now, A note about this video:
There are few lines which are not exactly translated, and some that are doubtful. I’m sorry, but sometimes they talk so fast and I can’t perfectly get the meaning of what they say.
Also, at the end of this clip, Matsumoto says something like “レベルか?” Which is pronounced “reberu”, and could refer to “level” as well as “rebel” and finally “revel”. I used the last one, thinking he was refering to the fact that Yamasaki was going to have a “party” after this (as if).
Leaving that aside, I plan on translating more and more, and feel free to leave me any request (gaki no tsukai related, of course).
I’ll give priority to short clips (less than 10 minutes) because they take less time, and I really don’t have much of it (’cause University, sports, dates, exams, study, playing the bass…).
Lastly, I’d like to remember that I’m translating those clips just for fun and sharing, I don’t have any copyright on the videos I upload.
That’s just a fan-translation by a fan, for the fans.
