Cielarc – Mystery Cat

This song came out a bunch hours ago, and it’s an arrange of Schrödinger’s Bakeneko from ZUN’s latest (at least for few more weeks!) CD Dr. Latency’s Freak Report.
It is full of quotes from touhou, from themes’ titles (The Far Side of the Moon, Border Between Dreams and Reality) to facts / episodes, like the Moon’s reflection on the water from Silent Sinner in Blue.
It’s style is close to TUMENECO‘s, I must say, but its instrumental section has pretty much nothing to do with them.
Anyway, I’m hyped enough for ZUN’s new announcement for C90, Dateless Bar “Old Adam”, another hifuu original CD with 5 new tracks, which seems to scream “ALCOHOL! JAZZ! UWABAMI BREAKERS!” everywhere, and I can’t be happier about it [2017 edit: it did not in the end, but is a nice album anyways]

Cielarc – Mystery Cat

I’ll solve all the mysteries I can’t yet explain;
As I don’t even know
Where the world I’m gazing at lies
A mysterious cat is luring somewhere…

tsuki to hoshi ga terashi dasu
tsuyoku nozomeba tadori tsuku?
yume to genjitsu no sakaime e

You can start seeing it once you close you eyes,
The light radiated by the Moon and the stars
Will I reach it if I deeply wish for it?
Towards the border between dreams and reality…

Notes:

– As I said, there are some quotes from touhou / titles of themes and such.
– Second stanza: While the original piece is called “yume to genjitsu no KYOUKAI”, in this song it appears “夢と現実の境目” (yume to genjitsu no SAKAIME), “border between dreams and reality”, which is a theme appearing in Changeability of Strange Dream. “Sakaime” and “kyoukai” mean the same thing, more or less.
– The third stanza refers to Schrödinger’s cat theory. That’s why it talks about a box, an unknown truth inside it and the wish to know it for real.
– The fourth stanza has a “mukou gawa no tsuki”, aka “The Far Side of the Moon”, closing track from Magical Astronomy.
– On the seventh stanza there could be an allusion to Silent Sinner in Blue, where “another world” (The Moon) is floating on the water surface. In the manga, Yukari uses this reflection on the water to get in the moon by using her boundary manipulation powers.
– Eight stanza: “higashi no kuni (wa kyou mo) nemuranai yoru (…)” features “higashi no kuni no nemuranai yoru”, which is the japanese title for Sleepless Night of Eastern Country, a them appearing both in Shoot the Bullet and Magical Astronomy. This theme reminds me my stay in Kyoto. Good times, good times!

ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY –

What about a japanish song about snow and winter in the middle of one of the hottest summer of my whole life?
Come on, we all like things like that, just like when they broadcast those totally uncalled for Christmas movies when it’s not Christmas.
I love this song and its vibe, but this translation will be really challenging, mostly because the feel it’s conveying is pretty damn difficult to reproduce in another language.
Starting from the beginning, the song keeps on repeating “furu furu furu” and “shin shin shin”.
Both “furu” and “shin” repeated all those times are merely there to make the song more lullaby-ish, and to create an atmosphere with onomatopeia-like sounds like those.
On a side note, “furu” also mean “to fall”, and can be used in a sentence to express “the snow is falling”, “it’s snowing”. That’s why I translated it this way.
About “shin”, things get more difficult. There are hundreds of kanjis which can be read as “shin” in their on-yomi reading. Among those, 進 (to advance), 深 (deep), 寝 (to sleep / to lay down), and again 振 (to fall / to wave) are the ones that caught my attention the most while thinking about kanjis whose reading is “shin”.
Those kanjis seems all to allude to something falling (振/進) down (深) with delicacy (寝/振), and I find it really appropriate with “furu”, which, on the contrary, doesn’t need much explaination.
Not only that, the song also refers to Yuki-onna, the snow lady creature from the japanese folklore, to the crane, symbol of Japan which could also allude to the famous kagome-kagome song, and other elements which are really not that hard to translate, but hard to keep intact in their original japanese beauty when translated.
This is one of those song which should be understood in its original language to stay untouched. But maybe… it’s always like that.
Anyway, this intro was part of a larger section of notes, be sure to check them out.

Falling, falling, falling, falling, on a Spring morning
Quietly, quietly, more and more, snow is blooming

kourohou wa ikaga kana–
sudare o agete miru yoroshi

How’s mount Xianglu by now, I wonder?
It would be good if I could look at it by lifting this bamboo blind…

Notes:

– furufuru / shinshin, as you read above, I kept them “falling” and “down”, with variations depending on the stanza they appear in (in other words, if there are other words to point out the “snowing” meaning or such, my translation could have variations).
– “ushi no koku” is a old way to say “2 A.M.”. The whole song has a classical vibe to it, so it’s not that unusual at all.
– “rikka” (六花) is another old way to say “snow”, and here’s a pun. The word “saku” means “to bloom”, and “rikka” is wrote with the kanji for “flower” (花).
– “furu” is also “to wave”, “to shake”, “to swing”, in the second to last stanza I found it more appropriate being the subjects two trees.
– I did some research over the last stanza, seems to talk about a poem by Bai Juyi, a chinese poet. The japanese translation of this poem「 遺愛寺の鐘は枕をそばだてて聴き、香炉峰の雪はをかかげてこれを看る 」(colored parts = appearing in this song) was well known to nobles of the Heian period, as well as other chinese poems even by the same author. The “kourohou” is the japanese transcription of the same word in chinese, which translates into xianglu-feng (Mount Xianglu, also know as “Incense Burner Peak“) which this poem refers to. The poem roughly translates into: “As I lift from my pillow and prick up my ears to the sound of iaiji (name of a temple)’s bells, I saw the snow covering the bamboo blind up there mount Xianglu”. What does that mean? Bamboo blinds were used to cover royal ladies, so they could speak to anyone behind them without being saw directly. And as a distant call of a temple’s bell wakes the writer up, the sound resonates as a calling, as a signal to extend his gaze beyond what’s on his reach towards the far off mount Xianglu where his love interest’s bamboo blind is slightly opened due the snow pressing over it. He’s not seeing this scenery, he’s rather imaginating it, being too far away. In other words, this poem is about longing for someone and the concept of distance, when knowing someone’s there, even if unreachable and far away, makes us feel as if we’re gazing at a beautiful scenery of closeness.
In this song, the verb for “bamboo blind” is “ageru” which means “to lift”, so the song is from the point of view of the girl inside the blind rather than the poet from the other side of Mount Xianglu…
Keeping all of this in mind, the translation won’t seem that weird… I think? Hope the meaning’s clear enough..!

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs – Zero Comma, Irotoridori no Sekai PART 2/5: 「

Back in May I’ve translated さんざめく by Mass of The Fermenting Dregs, and I feel like keeping on translating songs from that album.
So, there will be 5 posts about this album, the first being the one I translated in May, the second being this one (which is a double post) and the others coming soon on other different posts.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs –

owarihajimari

So, the first song from this post is the 3rd track from the album,
Not exactly the most original title (“the beginning of the end”, I mean…), but the song is surely something.
I really like the contrast between rhythm / lyrics. If you think about it, they’re pretty different, with the rhythm being energetic and the lyrics being not really that positive.
I really like when artists can do things like that, because it’s not something anyone can do without having it sounding dull.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs –

kowashite hajimeyou
ima, kita bakari no michi mo
toomawarishiyou
ima, mita bakari no michi o sa

I’ll start breaking everything
Right now, even the way that appeared just before me
I’ll take a detour
Right now, on that way I just saw

aruite ikeba
koko kara tsudzuite iku michi wa
kimi no omoi egaku iro ni somatte iku yo

If I’ll go by walk
The road that goes on from this point onwards
Will be painted in the colors you’re thinking about

sayonara to konnichi wa
kurikaeshiteiru nda
kimi mo boku mo onaji kyou no moto

We’re just repeating all over
Each “hello” and each “goodbye”,
As we’re both staying on the same present

tori ga tonda no o mite hajimari o shitta
owari to wa kou shite hajimaru mono da to

By looking at the birds flying, I understood what a beginning was about,
And that an end, in the same way, isn’t but a beginning.

Notes:

– I’ve left “I” as the subject of the first two stanzas. That “you” form is usually used when someone’s stating “let’s do X”, so it could also have been a plural, as in “we”, but I liked it that way more, because it delines better the contrast I was talking about before.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs –

And the second song from this post is track n°2, “made, jounetsu mikkusu”.
It was initially featured in a promo E.P. by them, but made it out to this album in the end.
What I like about this band is that even if they’re under the shoegaze genre of music, they’re pretty different form your average shoegaze band’s sound.
I think that their style of music is someway more approachable by anyone than some other shoegaze bands such as Tokyo Shoegazers, Oeil, Tokenai Namae, CLAMs or even My Dead Girlfriend.
Mainly because they’re song are more oriented on the pop/rock side.
Anyway, another amazing thing is that they only use few instruments but they always sound great. Stunning soloes, amazing bass lines, outstanding drumtracks.
That’s simply it.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs –

ano hi no you datta
kare wa kubi kashigete
watashi no namida o nomihoshite itta

It was just like that day,
He tilted his neck
And drained all my tears away

suriherashite wa, umeru sagyou da na
kore o anata wa nan to yobu?

To wear it all away is just a way to get rid of it, isn’t it?
How do you call all of this?

iikake no “sayounara”
doushitemo, ienakute

But I couldn’t manage anyhow
To say that “goodbye” I’ve left incomplete

kakotsukete
koshi o furu sagyou
tsunaide oita
amai omoide sae
ryoute ippai de mou motenai

By making an excuse
You shook your hips
With my surprise;
By now I can’t fully hold anymore
Your sweet memories with both my hands

dareka no sei ni shite
koko kara nigetai yo

I just want lay the blame on someone else
And get away from where I’m now

uso o tsuite
kaki o nakusu mane
minuite hoshii no
kanatte hoshii no
tada, kyou ga kyou de atta hoshii no

With a lie
You pretended to have lost a key
But I want to see through it,
I want to make it real,
I just want for today to be today…

ashita ga kuru made kinou ga saru made

yumeji

【Requested by Alv

Register6 is a great circle, I expecially love the way their lyrics are wrote.
It’s also true that in terms of music they’ve changed a lot, but tracks like this one made me feel as if there wasn’t any great change at all. After all this song is related to previous songs they made, and this made me really happy (also because I love the CD they’re talking about in this song). Everything’s explained in the notes, by the way.

The beginning is the end.

saihate ni egaita ketsumatsu wa
kimi no yume no naka de
The beginning is the end.

The conclusion depicted at the farthest ends
Is inside your dream
The beginning is the end.

mou dore dake toki ga tatta darou
deguchi no nai hakuchuumu no naka de
zutto samayou

I wonder how much time has passed by now?
I’ve always been wandering
Inside a daydream with no way out

mishiranu basho de hitori kiri
seijaku ni nomikomareteku
boku ga boku ja naku naru you de
kimi no namae o yonda

I’m being swallowed by quietness
Completely alone in a place I don’t know;
And I called out for your name
As if I wasn’t myself anymore

tasukete to sakenda sekai wa
yume to genjitsu no kyoukaisen
utsukushiku zankokuna sekai wa
hiki kaesu koto wa dekinai

The world who screamed for its salvation
Lies between the boundary of dreams and reality;
I just can’t bring back
This beautiful yet ruthless world…

I was beyond the point of no return.
How did that happen? Too late to turn back now.

nee yume o miru kimi to sugoshita
ano hibi wa mou modoranainda
okashii yo ne tada no yume datta no ni
torawareta no da

Look, the time I spent with your dreaming self:
Those days won’t return anymore.
Isn’t it strange? Even if it was just a dream
I was captured by it.

utsukushiku zankokuna sekai no
kuon no yumeji ni kiro wa naku
usure yuku kioku no naka ni wa
dare ka no omokage ga

There’s no way back on the neverending dream path
Of this beautiful yet ruthless world;
But inside my memories growing dimmer
I can feel someone’s trace…

kienai de to negau kotoba wa
todoku koto mo naku minamo wa tae
koko wa sou kayoi ji no shuuchaku
mou kaeru koto wa nai
mou au koto wa nai

As my praying words stay undelivered
The water surface calms down to stillness;
Here, I’m sure, is the end of this route
And I can’t go back anymore
And I can’t meet you again anymore.

Notes:

– The song’s title is the same as a previous album by Register 6, with the only difference being that in this song “kuon no yumeji” has a “no” in hiragana (の) on its title while the previous album had a “no” in katakana (ノ) on instead.
– This song is also linked to another song from the album I stated on the previous notes, and I’m talking about 夢の通い路 which I’ve already translated (click on it). The first 3 lines from the sixth stanza of this post’s song is similar to some stanzas on the other song (yume no kayoi-ji), just check them:
> kuon no yumeji, sixth stanza: “nee yume o miru kimi to sugoshita / ano hibi wa mou modoranainda / okashii yo ne tada no yume datta no ni”
> yume no kayoiji, sixth stanza: “nee yume o miru kimi to sugoshita / ano hibi wa mou modoranainda”, and again, on the second stanza “okashii yo ne tada no yume na no ni”.
Again, this song uses “見知らぬ場所で” (mishiranu basho de) which also appears in the other one.
Of course the two songs are linked between each other even because of their original themes. “kuon no yumeji” is an arrange of Yukari‘s theme, Necrofantasia, while “yume no kayoi-ji” is an arrange of Merry The Magician, which is kind of Maribel‘s theme.
Needless to explain how Yukari and Merry are related.
– Second stanza 時間 (jikan) is read as 時 (toki). They both mean “time”.
– Third stanza “sumikomarete(i)ku” is wrote with a “i”, which is not pronounced.

kimi to ireba taikutsu shinai
tsune ni nani ka ga okorunda
konna jikan ga tsudzuite iku to
shinjiteta

When I’m with you I never get bored
Because something will always happen
I believed that
The time spent this way would keep on going

I’m not like you but
we were able to understand each other.
That’s strange.
I have a long life.
You have a short life.
I don’t want to think about farewell with you.

kimi to no keshiki o itsumademo
towa ni towa ni negau
owari no nai hanashi wa nai to
wakatte wa iru, soredemo…

I’ll pray for the whole eternity
For a scenery in which I’m with you
And I know that there’s no such thing
As a tale without an end, but still…

naite, waratte, tsukihi wa nagare
otagai, sara ni chikadzuiteku
soredemo owari ga sasayaiteru
jikan da ne

Time flows by as we laugh and cry
And we’ll get closer and closer again
But still it’s the time
That’s whispering for an end to come

wakare ga futari o sakou to mo
iroaseru koto no nai uta o
semete… semete…

Even if our farewell will forcibly separate us
At least, at least
Let me sing this song whose color won’t ever fade away…

bokura no tsumuida omoide o
towa ni towa ni utau
wakare ga futari o sakou to mo
iroaseru koto nai you ni

I’ll sing about the memories we wove
For the whole eternity
So that even if our farewell will forcibly separate us
There won’t be no color fading away

kasuka demo, miete inakutemo
todoiteru to shinjite
itsumademo kono uta, utau yo
mata aeru hi o negau you ni

Even if it’s so blurry you can’t see it
I believe that it could reach you;
I’ll sing this song forever
Praying for the day we’ll meet again…

Notes:

– Third stanza, “monogatari” (物語, “tale”) is read as “hanashi” (話), which has a similar meaning. “monogatari” is more like a tale in a book, “hanashi” is more like something someone tells to another person, a “personal story” rather than something you could read in a book.
– I didn’t know this song was translated before I finished this post, I’m going to post it anyways.

Well, it’s the second time we got to see that disclaimer on a post, the first being in Diabolic Filth, from the same circle.
I think that its engrish is even worse than the words this song uses.
Anyway, at least to me, this song is still funnier than “shocking”, but still, its lyrics are not something I want to make appear on my homepage, so if you want to read the lyrics, notes and everything else you should just click “continue reading”.

[REQUEST] CLOCKWORKS TRACER – Our Show Must Go On!!

【Requested by Alv

It’s been a while since our last CLOCKWORKS TRACER‘s post, and I never actually knew about this song.
It seems to be an original track featured on barrage am ring 3, but I haven’t hear of this before listening to it prior to this post.
Come to think about it, their songs seems to be pretty hard to find. Lots of them are just hidden somewhere in some unknown album no one ever heard of, others are simply covered by other more famous circles.
For example, remember Shangri-La in Bloom? That album was (and still is!) really great, but it didn’t get much credit / wasn’t really that popular amongst touhou fans.
I’m still glad Yapan sent me that album’s lyrics and I got to translate / post it all!
Oh, by the way, in case you missed it you can check them here (even though there are unrelated posts…): click here.

CLOCKWORKS TRACER – Our Show Must Go On!!

Wake up and start this show!!

【Take my hand】

【Take my hand】omoi wa hitotsu
【Sing with me】kawari hajimeta sekai no sono saki e

【Take my hand】My wish is just one
【Sing with me】And it lies just before this world which has started to change

【This upright wish connects between us always and forever
Let’s spin the never ending story together】

ageta muitecha kuzureru ashimoto ni mo kidzukanai mama dakara hora
【This upright wish connects between us always and forever
Let’s spin the never ending story together】

But if you look up, you won’t even notice the ground crumbling under your feet, so…
【This upright wish connects between us always and forever
Let’s spin the never ending story together】

【Take my hand】
【Take your hand】

【Take my hand】daijoubu da yo
【Sing with me】uketomete kureru sono te wa itsumo soba ni
【Take your hand】minna matteru

【Our show must go on!!】

【Grip the past dream left behind
Even if it spills and falls, I can gather again (gather again)】

【time to shine is now!!
I’ll never lost my way
Trust the way to home with a smile
Let’s stand up and aim high】

surechigau hibi no naka
tashikameru hitsuyou nante nakatta nda sore wa…

Inside these days coming one after another
There wasn’t any need to make sure everything was certain, and that’s because…

【Take my hand】
【Take your hand】

【Take my hand】omoi wa hitotsu
【Sing with me】kawari hajimeta sekai no sono saki e ima
【Take your hand】donna toki demo
【Sing with us】te o toriatte itsuka yume mita sora
kagayaku ashita e mukaou

【Take my hand】Our wish is just one
【Sing with me】Now, just before this world which has started to change
【Take your hand】No matter when
【Sing with us】Let’s take our hands under that sky we once dreamed of
And face towards a radiant future!
