I couldn’t find the lyrics for this one, but Eiki found them for me, so thank you (even though I had them right before my eyes)!
I really like Syrufit, so I’m really glad I got to translate this.
This song is, in term of lyrics, the typical touhou arrange, where the arranged theme, Phantom Ensemble, also becomes the main topic of the song itself.
Despite being pretty long in terms of lyrics, I didn’t find it hard to translate at all, and I’m really thankful for that.
I really like cheerful songs like this one, it kind of fits the current season, doesn’t it?

Notes:

– Second stanza, it says “kage no ato”, where “ato” is wrote with the kanji for print / mark (跡), but could maybe imply “after the shadows”, “beyond the shadows” with the “ato” (後) meaning “over”, “beyond”.
– “one two three” is litterally in engrish even in the japanese lyrics. “wan tsuu tsurii”, to be precise.

This post is kind of the sequel from my previous one (and an unusual, unrepeating post).
And it’s also an emblem of my paradoxal attitude. In fact, this song is actually a Vocaloid one, the first I’ve ever translated and published and probably the last I’ll do.
There won’t be future posts like this one, it’s a promise.
With this post, I’ve officially came to an end with my old wordpress (thedistantjourney) which served as the basis for making this wordpress come to life and helped me getting acquainted with wordpress in general.
My old wordpress was a japanese->italian translation one (but I mostly translated from already existing english translations), and another feature it had, was a translation for the japanese novel Dantalian no Shoka.
It was a good novel and I loved its setting, sadly the anime was a total failure (at least to me) which ruined its mood and atmosphere.
Today’s song, Dantalian Calculated Symphony mix is a perfect example of the atmosphere this novel had, that’s why I loved it that much to the point I translated it in italian… poorly.
Now I can do it better, and so, it’s the final post of something I’ve already tried to do!
Sadly, this song is sung by Hatsune Miku, which, of course, being a Vocaloid stays away from what it could have been with a real person singing. There’s a cover by snowwhite somewhere, but it’s not exactly fitting for this song’s atmosphere (which, vocals aside, it’s really good in terms of rhythm: just listen to that solo at 3:47!).
I’d pay billions to hear Hanatan performing this!
And I wish someday some good singer would cover it. It’s only, big flaw is that it has no singer to perform it. But it’s still something I want to re-translate properly.
This post’s pretty nostalgic to me, lots of things sure have changed…

Notes:

– Of course the song is about the novel / manga, so it’s full of quotes and particulars from it. “I ask of thee, art thou mankind” is one of those. But also the “yomi-hime”, which translates as “reading princess”, which is a sort of sorcerer in the Dantalian no Shoka world. When the subject is not present, is most likely talking about books.
– First stanza, 人間 (ningen, “human”) is read as “hito” (人, “person”).
– Fourth stanza, 時間 (jikan, “time”) is read as “toki” (時, “time”).

[MISERICORDIA] 花たん – Dely

This song HAS been translated before, I’m sure of it.
But I was the first translating it. Years and years ago, before there was at least one english translation available for it, I translated it in italian. And almost nailed it.
Now, I can’t leave it behind, it’s one of the songs that I’ve loved the most and one of the most important japanese doujin/indie songs to me. And I’m also ready to translate it in a better way.
If I’m not wrong, this is a cover of a Vocaloid song (?), but as some of you may know, I’m not really that fond of Vocaloid.
Long story short, I prefer human voices over robot voices. Though there are some vocaloid-only songs that aren’t bad at all, probably one of those will be posted soon (as this one, something I’ve already “translated” on my old old wordpress).
Anyway, this song’s value isn’t the same it had some times ago, I got it by listening to it again.
It just doesn’t give me the chills it used to, but I still love it.
Hanatan’s vocals are simply amazing as always, and Yuyoyuppe is one of the most ingenious doujin arranger I’ve ever listened to.
I didn’t look up the booklet for these lyrics, and on each site I’ve found them on, there were two things.
The first is that “真実” (shinjitsu) is wrote everywhere as 辛い真実 (karai shinjitsu, bitter truth), but I mistook it for an error and removed it. But I still kept the “bitter truth” translation.
Similar to this, there was 過ぎ去った (sugisatta) instead of 去った (satta) in the last stanza, but it’s read as “satta”, so I’ve left it this way. They both mean the same thing, after all.
…Also, some comments on youtube for this song say “Luka (vocaloid)’s version is better than this!”
I’m a gentle type of person, I think everyone has their own personal tastes and anyone could like what they want. BUT F*CK YOU PIECE OF SH*T HOW DARE YOU COMPARE GLORIOUS HANATAN TO F*CKING RETARDED-SOUNDING ROBOTS YOU’RE F*CKING INSANE DUDE.
…I mean. THIS ONE is better, it’s a fact. You may like that other version more, but it doesn’t mean that, objectively, this version is inferior. Because it isn’t, technically speaking.

I like this song! Even though I can’t really say the lyrics weren’t confusing.
The biggest problem is the title, as you will read in the notes.
And that “H”, and the overall imagery the song is trying to depict, which didn’t really helped me getting an actual image of what is it talking about.
But I like the rhythm and the whole voice + chorus thingy.
Kind of reminds me of other hifuu-related songs I’ve already translated, the one from Kimi no Museum in particular.
It’s still pretty challenging translating touhou stuff, I think I could do it way better if I had more knowledge about each circle / author / whatever.
After all, the main issue here is about trying to convey what the song tried to do. Mission status: completed. With success? I don’t really know, but I don’t think I could reach a different ending. I can’t say I’m not satisfied though.

Notes:

– The stanzas with the blank space on the left are the chorus.
– 相室 (soushitsu) on the fourth stanza. I don’t know if it’s a word, but it could be a pun. With other kanjis, 喪失 (soushitsu) could mean “loss”, “death”, “disappearance”, but here it’s wrote with “assembly” and “chamber”, as if it’s recalling the machiai-shitsu (waiting room) on the previous stanza. I tried to blend the meanings.
– Again, on the same stanza, there’s 実 (mi – jitsu) which I don’t know how is read here (it’s part of the chorus), but it could be “fruit” (if it’s read as “mi”) or “truth”, if it’s read as “jitsu”. Again, blended meanings.
– I really don’t know what that “H” refers to. “H” in japanese… well, you know what “ecchi” stands for, don’t you? I highly doubt is that, but I can’t find a clear explaination. It could be the “H” for “Hifuu Kurabu” (Secret Sealing Club), or, by the same kanji, for the word “Himitsu”, meaning “Secret”. That’s what I thought, but I’m not sure.
– The title for this song “suikaki gougun”, which also appears more than once in the song, isn’t an idiom. Thus, it can’t be translated in a single way. I think it’s some sort of pun / reference I’m not getting, thus my translation for it is just an interpretation of the kanjis / words it’s composed of.
– デヰト (deeto) is wrote with ヰ, a (now) unused katakana sign which has the same meaning as ー (in other words, makes vowels longer). It should have been デート instead.

– Same thing as I said one sentence before, I don’t know if the romajis are correct, because I had nothing to compare them with.
– 過邦 should be read in some other way I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure it’s read as “kako” (past) in this song.

Time for a serious post about what’s going on with this wordpress.
I’ve been writing all of this since this morning.
I scrapped lots of drafts and I came to this conclusion: a short post that could explain everything.
So, in few words, here’s what I want you to know.
The music I translate in this wordpress isn’t the music I want to translate. I listen to very few touhou doujin music / anime/ videogame stuff, and I think I’ve kind of grew out of it. THOUGH that doesn’t mean I’m quitting this wordpress. Because there are still songs (not entire album / artists, just songs) that mean a lot to me and even lots of the ones I’ve already translated were very significant to me. And that doesn’t even mean that I dislike doujin music. I still think that ZUN’s a genious, and there are lots of songs by doujin circles that I love. But I can’t seem to fit in this category of music.
The only consequence to this, is probably about requests. The more you request, the longer time it will get. Requesting a song means that I have to work on a translation which I don’t know if it will be easy or not or if I’ll like or not. So, I don’t think I’m saying something bad if I’d state that requests won’t be frequent / fast.
After all, this is my wordpress isn’t it? This of course isn’t because I’m tired of people who request songs, but I’m not stimulated enough piling up requests for songs I don’t know / don’t want to translate.
Things will get slower, but it doesn’t mean I won’t translate them. “Pending” = “I know I have to translate it, give it some time, it’ll came out”. Keep that in mind.
So, in other words, Foreground Noises is what it has become throughout those two years: a place for doujin music.
And I don’t want to change that.
I’ve tried to blend up lots of other things (gyaku, shoegaze, poetry), but it didn’t work, at least to me.
Let’s focus on shoegaze, or, more in general, japanese indie / non-doujin/ non-anime /non-videogame music.
I’d love to translate more of those, because I think that’s the type of japanese music I seem to fit the most in.
But it feels so out of place in this wordpress.
So, I made another one.
A monochromatic one. More serious. Without me being part of it. Without any more words aside from lyrics and descriptions.
A silent place where the notes and the words blend up together into something silent and personal.
A wordpress which is not mine, but it’s everyone’s.
Its name is 感激宴会 ~ Kangeki Enkai, and you can already see its first post structure (from a foregroundnoises post, even the other two shoegaze will be added ASAP).
Here, I’ll publish translation for Shoegaze / Indie / Non-anime/Non-Jgame/Non-touhou/Non-doujin songs, but again, it’s more like a personal archive rather than a wordpress for fun like this one.
I want those songs that I feel closer to me to be on the other wordpress, so the silly atmosphere of this one won’t be ruined and viceversa.
Normal posts will pop out on this wordpress too, that’s not a goodbye.
But they’ll probably slow down to give the other wordpress some space too.
I hope you’ll like the other posts as well as this wordpress’s.
