The very last 2015 post – foregroundnoises’s past, present and future

2015lastpost

It’s been a lot since I start translating, and it’s been more than one year that I started writing for foregroundnoises.
Few more hours and 2016 will begin. Well, at least in Italy. If you’re, like, japanese or something and you’re already in 2016 then happy new fucking year, you time-traveling faget.
I can’t say I’m one of those guys who believe in things like “new year, new life”.
I’m more like those people who look back at the year that has just passed and think about what happened and what didn’t.
This year was an amazing year for this wordpress, and I have to thank each and everyone of you who supported me.
Those who sent me the lyrics I was searching for, those who requested me songs to translate, those who apreciated my haiku posts and retrospectives, those who posts lyrics videos on youtube using my translations (and crediting me for them), simply everyone who helped me enjoy this all.
It was almost 1 year ago that I decided to turn this wordpress into what’s today, and at first it was something I did for myself.
I wanted to translate stuff because I wanted more chances to practice with my japanese learning, but thanks to everyone who showed me their support, I’ve started to treasure this website and pouring a little bit of myself in it.
It’s like a community now. People exchanging opinions, reading lyrics and talking about music, artists, circles, tastes, reading and writing poetry and sharing their own little opinions and stories.
I love this and I wish it’ll keep being like this (or even better!) for the next year.
Frankly speaking, I know things are going to change.
I just graduated from university and I’m probably going to spend some months in Japan for a study-enhancing-full-immersion as soon as I can, so I won’t be able to post as much, maybe.
And I have big plans for my life that I don’t know if I can fullfil or not, but I still want to try.
Anyway, I hope that when things will get busy I’ll find some time for this wordpress, because I don’t want to let it out of my life!
But I think there’s no other choice but to change something a little bit.
Let me explain what’s going to change, what’s going to stay the same, what you should expect sooner or later and what will, or better, could happen.

Posting time. I won’t be able to keep the posts number high like I did in those last months, and that’s mainly because I graduated from university and I intend to keep studying, going to Japan for some months and from September starting my studies on a different university (a more difficult one) which will take me lots of time not before finding some job to do in order to save some money. In other words, there won’t be lots of changes during the first months of 2016, being that everything is going to start from the last weeks of March, but I’m planning to work really hard on tons of things that could interfere with my blog. Of course, my wordpress is also a good practice for me, so what will change (when everything is settled) will be just the number of posts and their non-lyrics related content. Everything else will be the same. And of course if I’m away from a long timespan for a reason or another I’ll let the readers know it.

Requests. As you read on the post fixed on my twitter account, requesting a song will have more strict approach. I won’t accept more than one request, I’ll give priority to those who never requested before and I can refuse a request if you haste my work or you simply act as a prick. Also, the time for a requested song to be translated will probably be longer. But requests will still be active on this wordpress, so feel free to request something if you want to. But not before READING and UNDERSTANDING everything that’s written HERE.

Haiku project. I knew from the beginning that the monthly haiku project wasn’t something eternal on this wordpress. From the beginning I intended to make 13 posts, the first being on July 2015 and the last being on July 2016, but the haiku posts are actually the most difficult ones to build up, and with this I mean their html structure is the most complicated and is really tiring. So, giving that I won’t have much time, I’m forced to halve the duration of the haiku project. Meaning that the haiku post of January will (probably) be the last one for now. And that doesn’t mean that I won’t keep on writing poetry, I’ll just stop posting them here monthly.
Who knows, a haiku post can pop out randomly again in the future…
Actual schedule is: January (100% post), February (50%), July (100%, the very last post).

Gaki no Tsukai. Yeah, that too. I removed all my Gaki no Tsukai videos from youtube after two copyright strikes, and I don’t plan to continue. I decided to do so beacuse if I’d get a third one, my channel will be shut down and done for good. My channel will still be active and I’ll keep translating touhou-japanese stuff (without copyright), but not Gaki no Tsukai. But maybe who knows, I can take part of some GnT fansub team again like I already did sometimes some time ago.
Or maybe I’ll just keep translating / uploading on different websites. Truth is, it takes a lot of time. And if my efforts are repayed with youtube removing my videos… uhh.. nono.
I’m planning on opening another wordpress / website in which I’ll post gaki no tsukai subtitle files in italian, being that no one has ever translated those in my language and I wish more non-english speaker italians could enjoy this hilarious tv show as well! Though, again, being this project in italian, it won’t feature on this all-english/japanese wordpress.

Random Posts. In other words, opinions post, top 10 posts, gyaku posts. Mh. Well, I can’t find time for gyaku posts, so I think they’ll get really rare to the point they’ll eventually disappear. Opinions / top tens could pop out sometimes, but expect them rarely. I’d like to focus on translations for the next year.

Back on track, for the upcoming 2016… of course I have some plans.
First of all, expect (probably) fresh Comiket stuff during the first weeks of January.
I also have another thing that I want to start in this wordpress that will also feature translations. But I won’t say anything for now.

Another “big” change is a psychological one.
Maybe I’m going to make this wordpress more a translation website rather than a place where I can express myself.
Because I personally don’t find easy to pour myself into this blog, as japanese music is only a tiny, tiny piece of the puzzle of things I like that helped me becoming who I am today.
So… yeah. Can’t say anything for sure now, but probably some things might disappear. Or even some contacts of mine. But I’ll make sure everyone could still reach me somehow, so don’t worry.

—————————

Oh, yeah. A thing I wanted to do (maybe a lil’ bit better…).
Here’s a list of some of the translations post I’ve liked / I’ve treasured the most from this year (requests too).
You can say this is a small review for the almost late 2015. Go read em if you haven’t before! I only added those which I treasure the most for a reason or another, though! Order? Random. Totally random.

Why are those “the most important” songs of 2015?

– Register6 – ずっと
“The most important song I’ve translated on my own on this wordpress. There are some songs that I could say are somewhat close in importance to this one, but those were songs that have already been translated before. The fact I was the first translating a song that means so much to me is still something I could feel satisfied about. Still one of my favourite touhou “arrange” song (even if it’s an original, actually) and still gives me chills each time I listen to it. I wonder if the memories bound to this song are still real? Maybe it was all a dream. I seem to forget important things happened in my past as the time ticks its way to the future, but each time I listen to these kind of songs, I feel like the memories are still alive. Shapeless, blurry, but alive.”

– Ayaka – たしかなこと
“I think among the various request I got during 2015, this has to be the one that I’ve come to like the most. Interestingly enough, that’s the only non-touhou / non-kancolle / non-absolute-castaway original request that had such a huge impact on me. It came along with a Kancolle MV, but it actually has nothing to share with it. Its typical “japanese classical song” vibe is really soothing, and the lyrics are really touching. This has to be one of the greatest discoveries I’ve made through requests, and it makes me feel satisfied about starting this whole request thing. Well, there are other requests that I’ve treasured a lot, but none of them can overcome this one in importance. At least for me and… at least for now!”

– 俺++ (Includeore) – Voice
“Dating back on the days where I couldn’t even read hiragana, this song was always stuck on my mind. While I don’t claim (and probably never will) to be someone who could fully understand japanese, I can at least say that, right now, I’m a little bit able to understand the meaning of the lyrics I analyze. And this song, that was locked deep down my subconscious, was still there, without a translation for all those years. I felt like I needed to translate it, because while I don’t listen that much to this song in recent times, I used to listen to it no stop back then. It reminds me of cherry trees and Hanami. We have that in Italy too, thanks to Japan’s donation of 1000 japanese sakura trees to Rome, which dates back to WWII. Maybe I was listening to this song nonstop while watching sakura trees on full bloom. It was nice and peaceful. This song makes me feel at ease as it did back then.”

– Hirasawa Susumu – MOON TIME
“This song is an important step to this wordpress, a step which stayed untouched but I wish it will eventually become a walk, a march, a running. We’re talking about an absolute genious in terms of music and approach to the music world. I think an artist like that and a song like that are really different compared to the rest of this wordpress’s material. That’s why I translated this song when I started the Haiku thing. Because I felt like it would have splendid to have the whole “sophisticated” (what a presumptous word…) mood all over this place. Well, I still think that Susumu Hirasawa is one of the greatest japanese composer of all time. Right behind ZUN, and I’m not even joking around. Maybe I’m sticking to Touhou because deep down I know that I feel like I’m in debt for ZUN’s amazing works. Weren’t we talking about Hirasawa-sensei? Well, well. Let’s keep it a step, for now.”

– 回路-Kairo- – Dying
“Another request I got from someone. An overall simple song, that has something really fascinating on it. Its main topic, as the title suggest, is the concept of death. The title itself “dying” is enough to send me chills down my spine. I like its simple lyrics and rhythm more than I thought it would. The main bridge of this song is still imprinted in my mind even though I didn’t listen to it that much. Promises, hopes, dreams, people to meet and things to do, coming to an end before our very eyes. Isn’t this terrible but romantic at the same time? Yeah, it could sound paradoxal, but this is the kind of stuff that makes my stupid heart race. “It’s just like waking up from a dream…” isn’t it? Dying. It’s really philosophical. After all, “Dying” is a process. It means that we’re all dying, after all, slowly. We’re both living and dying at the same time. This song makes me have weird thoughts. And I love it.”

– (A-HEAD) Arato – コモリウタ
“This song deserves credit for two reasons. The first is more simple and straight-forward. Because its intro is something AMAZING beyond words! I swear 0:38 is one of the most epic things I’ve heard in a while, and it gets even better when the main guitar gets in. Man! This song is really great. The second reason, is because I like it. Eh? It doesn’t make any sense? No, it does. Let me explain. The whole song revolves around Alice in Wonderland, which is absolutely NOTHING original in the doujin-song field. And yet, this song has nice lyrics, an amazing drum / guitar / chorus / bass / everything track and a really soothing vocal that makes it my favourite Alice-in-Wonderland based song ever. Even beyond ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY’s ones. They’re not bad too, by the way.”

– ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY – 世界が嫌いなキミへ
“Ok, there are some ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY songs right now. The first is “sekai ga kirai na kimi e”, which is like Voice by Includeore in terms of “why I think of it as an important 2015 song”. And yeah, there’s not really much to add, I used to be stuck up on this song before entering university. And now I have my shitty degree already. Woah. But as I said before, the short version is… enough. I don’t find the full version of this song appealing, because the lyrics worsen and it doesn’t add much to the lyrics / harmony. But still, is a song that used to be a nail stuck on my head back then. It felt so good translating it!”

– ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY – Mellow
“This is another request I got, and I never listened to it before getting that request. I like this song a lot, and it reminds me of other ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY’s masterpieces that I have already translated. The best AC (let’s write them like that from now on) song I’ve ever listened to is 待宵姫, which I’ve translated like A LONG TIME AGO on this wordpress (and of course, not being part of 2015 I couldn’t add to this list), followed by Initium Volume, which I’ve translated too, but same story of the other. Mellow reminds me of both these songs, so of course I feel in love with it. It’s an important song to me because it made me realize that even if I think I know everything about something, there’s always still something I have yet to come in touch with. I think a life worth living is a life where our curiosities are never satisfied enough. Which is not sad at all, if you think about it.

– ABSOLUTE CASTAWAY – 慟哭の杜
“There could be pretty much every AC song on this list, but let’s stick to those three for now. This one is really something. Listening to this song makes me feel like I’m sourrounded by a forest where an unknown Shrine stays silent in its center. And I feel part of that nature. Is really strange. I don’t have memories to link to this song, or people, or anything. But as soon as I listen to it, images of something I’ve never actually saw with my very eyes pop out clearly as if they’re the most common thing I’m used to look at. That’s the power of a song. And I found this song really important because it’s one of those songs, probably one of the most evocative between them. Well, AC are really good at doing this by any means.”

– Further Ahead of Warp – Calm Days Are Drawing A Distant Star
“I could say something really similar to what I said about ずっと by register6 for this song, with the only difference that I was not the first translating it. I think this song and ずっと are really similar between each other, as if they were sisters. That’s a very important song to me, that’s why I couldn’t help but translating anew anyways. Because, after all, this is SHION’s translations archive. So I do whatever I want to do. #yolo #swag #hashtags #whatamidoing”

– TUMENECO – らせんのゆめ
“Maybe this song is similar to the other two I’ve been talking about before. Mhh… maybe. But still, this song’s really important to me and while it holds the same feeling as ずっと on a side, on the other it has a totally different feeling that makes me wonder about the future. ずっと is a song for the past, something that happened, could have happened, I thought it happened. This song too, but everything is projected in the future. So, it’s also a song of hope, of possibilities, of dreams. That’s why I like it that much. And another thing, this song isn’t that sad. That means I don’t refrain from listening it. Calm Days / Zutto are more sad, in my opinion, so I don’t listen to them that often. This one is always good. It’s a gem amongst touhou doujin music that everyone should listen at least one time, paying attention to its lyrics, its message, its… everything. I think that’s one of the song I hold dearest. And it’s pretty easy to guess it.”

– Clockworks Tracer – Everlasting [S]tory
“Clockworks Tracer were the greatest discovery of 2014/2015. Shangri-La in bloom is an album I treasure a lot, and it’s the closest thing to FgE’s style in terms of composition / feeling behind them. This song has one of FgE’s feature on it. The fact that it’s really soothing even though its rhythm is crazy fast. I can relax while listening to this song. Plus, it’s an arrange of what I think (not personally, but in general) the greatest theme ZUN ever composed, and it doesn’t ruin it at all.”

– Clockworks Tracer – Drowning Emotion Has A Short-lived Dream -Rebloom-
“This has to be my favourite CwT song ever. If I take some pieces of some songs by them, I can probably find some songs that are better than this one, but in their integrity, no one reaches the level of this one. For example, The final part of “Always and Forever” by CwT is probably one of the most touching and beautiful song conclusion that I have ever listened to, and that alone completely overshadows CwT’s other songs’ endings. But the song itself isn’t as good as this one, if we considered it as a whole, and not divided in segments. This other song is amazing from the beginning to the end, in each segment, with each and every change it does. And yet, is probably the song by them that no one seems to remember the most. Why?!”

– Alice Music – Raison d’être
“Why this song is important is similar to sekai ga kirai na kimi e and voice. It’s because it was a song I was stuck up with. But in a different way. I never liked this song too much in terms of music, it just made me feel happy when listening to it. And it was the first song which I tried to analyze before starting learning japanese. “tsumetai namida no sekai”, I got that even without knowing japanese. I know what it was and what it meant. That’s probably the song that lead me to start translating and made my interest in japanese language grow.”

– TatshMusicCircle – また会える日まで・・・
“Maybe it’s the bass? Nah, it’s not. Lyrics. I love them. It’s pretty easy to buy me when it comes to lyrics, because there are those topics that get me every time without failing. The reason I love this song is probably because it came into my life right in a moment where it fit perfectly. It’s an important piece of music for an important piece of my life. That’s why I had to put it on this list.”

– Unlucky Morpheus – No Grudge Anymore
“There’s a place near where I live. Well, that’s not actually really near. Anyway, it’s a small village atop a mountain. There aren’t many people living there, and it’s all like a quiet stronghold. I remember I was listening to this song when I first saw this village while riding my car. And for some reason, I always end up listening to Reincarnation or No Grudge Anymore when I go there. It doesn’t make much sense, right? I mean, it’s a small, quiet and gracious village. Has it something to do with evil spirits? I doubts so. Still, I’m that type of person which ends up linking music to places. And people. And memories. And even things that never actually happened. Always.”

– YUUHEI SATELLITE – パラノイアの海
“This one’s more simple. It was one of the first 2015 post, and the song that made my new translation activity start anew. It was also thanks to youtube and expecially Nitori Kappashiro (at the beginning) who used my translation for his upload video, and I kinda started getting views. And then requests, and then lots of other uploader started bounding with me and using my translation crediting my works. That was and still is amazing. It’s a little thing, but it makes me kinda satisfied. All the world is connected! And I’m translating this all from an unknown small city in the middle of nowhere!”

– 電気式華憐音楽集団 (Denkare) – W.M.S.
“Probably the reason I ended up studying and loving japanese is the amount of japanese music I came across during the most crucial years of my life (around the time between when I was 16 and 19 years old). And lots of the music I used to listen non-stop was something that Jaefine made me first listen to. I owe her a lot. It was thanks to her that I’ve decided to give this shape to my life. This song, along with tons of others, is one of Jaefine’s and thus holds a huge value to me.”

– DAOKO – Girl (Side A – さみしいかみさま)
“Ok, that’s a weird one. Oddly enough, that’s the post that made my views boom. It’s still the most viewed and shared post on my wordpress, and I can easily guess why. First of all, it’s not a doujin song, so it’s more known amongst western fans. Second, it’s from a successful anime. Well, Me!Me!Me! was a great success as a music video, and this one follows up its prequel in terms of music / content. So of course everyone would have watched it! I knew that, and I decided to translate it as soon as it came out. Well, it’s not like I dislike getting views. Plus, I liked Me!Me!Me! a lot both in terms of music and animation. This one is great too. Side A is also a really good song, so I can’t say I translated it only to get views. But seeing japanese people commenting my “Side B post” with “your translation is probably the best between the others I’ve read” sure made me feel proud of myself. Fuck yeah!”

– supercell – Perfect Day
“That’s simply one of the most important songs of my life, that I can link to almost everything and everyone, but again, I can’t link to anything or anyone. It’s pretty much impossible to say. I wanted it to be on my wordpress. And I’ve also posted it on a very important day…
…Well, it WAS important. Life goes on, I guess.”

————————–

For now there’s nothing else to add.
Thanks again to everyone who supported me during this year, and I hope this 2016 will be amazing as 2015 was!
So, happy new year to everyone reading this post!
See you back on the second week of January with more posts / requests and stuff!

[REQUEST] ふぉれすとぴれお – 心象風景

remmm

【Requested by Helly

Septette for a Dead Princess is probably the most arranged theme ever. Or at least one of the top 10 most arranged.
This is not even the first post which is an arrange of it, but I don’t care as long as it sounds good.
And this does, really!
This song was really easy to transcribe, but not to translate.
I’ve studied some classical japanese, and this song is full of it.
While I don’t claim to be an expert of heian-period japanese grammar, I’m pretty sure I didn’t f*ck everything up.

ふぉれすとぴれお – 心象風景

夢から覚めては永遠に夢を見た
高く照らしゆく、紅くなりし月夜よ
私はそう思い出す あなたと描いた風景

yume kara samete wa eien ni yume o mita
takaku terashi yuku, akaku narishi tsukiyo yo
watashi wa sou omoidasu anata to egaita fuukei

I had an eternal dream each time I woke up from another
There was a moonlit night turnt crimson, getting more and more radiant
That’s what I recall, a scenery I’ve drawn with you

紅色染まる 両の頬をなでるそよ風
辿る足跡 いつの世も忘れずいるよ

akaiiro somaru ryou no hoho o naderu soyo kaze
tadoru ashiato itsu no yo mo wasurezu iru yo

A gentle wind softly caresses both my cheeks, painted in red;
The footsteps which follow me shan’t forget the world from back then

月夜を染める、高く舞う恋歌
今にはもうこの世にあらざるあなたへと奏でよう
心に描く心象風景
あなたの手を握って歩いた景色 思い出せずに

tsukiyo o someru, takaku mau renka
ima ni wa mou kono yo ni arazaru anata e to kanadeyou
kokoro ni egaku shinshoufuukei
anata no te o nigitte aruita keshiki omoidasezu ni

Paint this moonlit night, rising love song of mine,
Dance towards thou, who aren’t part of this world anymore;
The imaginated landscape drawn inside my heart…
As I can’t recall the scenery of me walking holding thy hand…

大地を埋める、広く咲く花よ
日傘の中 その地に踏み込み あなたのため摘み行こう
心に描く心象風景
あなたがもう遠くなりにけり
私 生き続けてる ずっと生き続けるよ

daichi o umeru, hiroku saku hana yo
higasa no naka sono chi ni fumikomi anata no tame tsumiyukou
kokoro ni egaku shinshoufuukei
anata ga mou tookunari ni keri
watashi ikitsudzuketeru zutto ikitsudzukeru yo

Bury the Earth’s ground, oh widely blooming flower!
Stepping into this ground inside my parasol, I’ll pick it for you;
The imaginated landscape drawn inside my heart…
Thou art grown far, far away already
And I… I’ll keep living, I’ll keep on living forever.

夢から覚めては永遠に夢を見た
高く照らしゆく、紅くなりし月夜よ
あなたと描いた遠い 心象風景

yume kara samete wa eien ni yume o mita
takaku terashi yuku, akaku narishi tsukiyo yo
anata to egaita tooi shinshoufuukei

I had an eternal dream since when I woke up from the other
There was a moonlit night turnt crimson, getting more and more radiant
That’s the faraway imaginated landscape I’ve drawn with you-

Notes:

– I don’t like how I translated the first stanza, but couldn’t find a better way. The song says “yume” two times on the same line, so I tried my best not to write “dream” twice. Hope it doesn’t sound strange to you as it sounds to me.
– Hope I didn’t f*ck up the use of “arcaic” english sometimes. I tried to convey the old verb forms in japanese into english. I’ve probably failed. Let me know if anything’s wrong.
– There’s nothing that can confirm who’s the subject of the second stanza. Could be both “you” or “me”. I used “me”, but they’re both possibilities.

魂音泉 (TAMAONSEN) – 星の器

hoshi

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!
Aaaaaand there goes my greeting. Today’s post has nothing to do with Christmas whatsoever.
TAMAONSEN is a circle that I actually discovered not so much time ago and ended up enjoying a lot. I still have listened way too few songs by them to clearly state that I like them, but still some of the songs I’ve listened to are really good.
One thing that I like about this circle is that they’re really good arranging good rap songs.
This one is an example (however, still not the best one imho), and I’ve really want to translate it for so long.
It is probably one of the catchiest touhou arrange I’ve ever listened to, I clearly remember this getting stuck in my head after listening to it only once.
The lyrics are really long, but the song itself isn’t so long. That’s because everything keeps repeating and repeating all over again.
And that’s probably the reason why this song is so catchy.
Also, chiptune + rap + double vocal… of course everyone would like a song like this!

魂音泉 (TAMAONSEN) – 星の器

That’s the story of the centre of the corner of our planet

Notes:

– The whole song features a double-vocal, male (rappubito) and female (tama-chan), but there’s no clear dinstinction in the lyrics. Also, things inside the parenthesis are the background vocals.
– Also, the whole song seems to be based off the myth of Orihime and Hikoboshi. Long story short, a love-story between Gods. And the reason why Tanabata exists nowadays. Orihime also appears in the song’s lyrics more than once, the first time in the fifth stanza.
– Second stanza 想い can be both “thoughts” or “memories”. Couldn’t decide, they’re both good. I guess “memories” is a little bit better.
– (dontwanttosearchfortherightstanza) it says “skypia” on a certain point. I’m sure this is a word for “utopia”, some reference I didn’t catch. So I wrote “Shangri-La”, which is a reference I could understand and has the same meaning.

音召缶 (OTOMEKAN) – HOWLING at the MOON

moya

When it comes to touhou music, I always end up searching for arranges of theme I like a lot.
And that’s how I found out about this song.
HOWLING AT THE MOON is an arrange of Bamboo Forest in Flames from the recent game Urban Legend in Limbo.
I love this theme. It’s not by ZUN, but I still love it.
It’s the theme for the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, and you can hear it throughout the story mode each time you face Fujiwara no Mokou.
Not only Mokou is one of my favourite touhou character, but with ULiL I come to like her even more.
And it’s a shame this theme isn’t considered to be Mokou’s, ’cause I find it very fitting for her character and her style in ULiL.
Nevertheless, I like to think of 竹林インフレイム as Mokou’s secondary theme.
This post is a message to touhou doujin circles: Arrange this f*cking theme, please! It’s AWESOME!
…Actually this whole post is probably more about chikurin in flame rather than the arrange itself…

Notes:

– Third stanza: “kiseki” wrote with those kanjis means “train tracks” (which I translated to “path” because c’mon, we’re not talking about trains). But the word, with different kanjis, can also mean “miracle”. That’s why I translated like this when it appears again. 99% is what the song’s meaning wanted to convey to begin with.

Foreground Eclipse – Someday In The Rain

kg1

As I stated on the last Foreground Eclipse’s Retrospective post, there are still few songs by Foreground Eclipse that have never been translated.
Talked bonus tracks aside (aka the ones from Wishes Hidden in the Foreground Noises and Tears Will Become Melodies Tonight), there are only どらぶ, some parts of 恋のTwinkle☆Dance (Secret Track from Stories That Last Through The Sleepless Nights) and this one.
Finding the lyrics for this wasn’t even hard as I imagined it could have been, so why hasn’t this been translated before?
I have no idea, but for how much I don’t like this song as much as others from the same band, I’m kind of happy to be the first to translate a yet-untranslated FgE song!
I think I’ll also keep searching for どらぶ’s lyrics. Which is kinda like saying “let’s go search for the Holy Grail”.
Enough of this all, you already know what I could say about it.
Enjoy the lyrics!

Foreground Eclipse – Someday In The Rain

暗い梅雨空溶けて行く
雲の隙間に浮かべた
憂鬱吹き飛ばしてよ
退屈はもういらない

kurai tsuyuzora tokete yuku
kumo no sukima ni ukabeta
yuuutsu fuki tobashite yo
taikutsu wa mou iranai

Floating between the clouds’ gaps
I’m melting in the dark rainy season cloudy sky
My melancholy is being blown away
And I don’t need boredom anymore!

降りしきる雨に打たれて
この声は君に届かない

furi shikiru ame ni utarete
kono koe wa kimi ni todokanai

Hit by a neverending downpouring rain
This voice of mine can’t reach you

Someday in the Rain雨よもっと降れ
悲しみ痛み全部洗い流して
私の心へ降り注ぐ
土砂降りの雨の中で立ちつくす夕暮れ

Someday in the Rain ame yo motto fure
kanashimi itami zenbu arainagashite
watashi no kokoro e furisosogu
doshaburi no ame no naka de tachitsukusu yuugure

Someday in the Rain, pour down some more!
And wash away my pain, my sadness, everything!
Don’t ever stop raining inside my heart
Because inside this heavy rain, a twilight stands still

夏の青空染めて行く
風の匂いと夕立
陽炎ゆらゆら揺れた
紫陽花が散り急ぐ

natsu no aozora somete yuku
kaze no nioi to yuudachi
kagerou yura yura yureta
ajisai ga chiri isogu

Come and paint the summer’s blue sky
With the scent of wind and an evening shower
Rolling from side to side, the heat haze is swaying
And the hydrangeas fall down in haste

蒸し暑い午後のさよなら
あの頃へ二度と戻れないなら

mushiatsui gogo no sayonara
ano koro e nido to modorenai nara

That “goodbye” on a humid afternoon…
If I can’t go back to that time again, then…

Someday in the Rain君の中にある
悲しみ嘆き全部洗い流して
心の奥底呟いた
土砂降りの雨が止んだ雨上がりの空へ

Someday in the Rain kimi no naka ni aru
kanashimi nageki zenbu arainagashite
kokoro no okusoko tsubuyaita
doshaburi no ame ga yanda ameagari no sora e

Someday in the Rain is right inside you
Wash away my sadness, my grief, everything
That’s what the bottom of my heart muttered
Towards a sky where the heavy rain just ceased

君は何を伝えたかった?夢の中
その声を聴いていたかった
いつかの雨降り続く空いつまでも
消えない雲見つめているよ ah

kimi wa nani o tsutaetakatta? yume no naka
sono koe o kiiteitakatta
itsuka no amefuri tsudzuku sora itsumade mo
kienai kumo mitsumeteiru yo ah

What did you want to say to me? Inside a dream
I was listening to that voice;
I’m watching the clouds that won’t ever fade away
On the same endlessly raining sky of that day, ah

Someday in the Rain 雨よもっと降れ
悲しみ痛み全部洗い流して
私の心へ降り注ぐ
土砂降りの雨の中で立ちつくす夕暮れ

Someday in the Rain ame yo motto fure
kanashimi itami zenbu arainagashite
watashi no kokoro e furisosogu
doshaburi no ame no naka de tachi tsukusu yuugure

Someday in the Rain, pour down some more!
And wash away my pain, my sadness, everything!
Don’t ever stop raining inside my heart
Because inside this heavy rain, a twilight stands still

LaLaLa…

Notes:

– In the third stanza, it says “Someday in the Rain” in english and then “雨” (ame) which is “rain” too. So, I didn’t want to write it twice. I hope it doesn’t sound too weird.
– Third stanza, there’s nothing implying my “because”, but I think that’s what the song is trying to convey.
– Fourth stanza, the hydrangea is a purple flower, typical of summer.
– Sixth stanza, it says “doshaburi” and “ameagari”, words that can’t be translated without being repetitive. So, the very last line from this stanza should be something like: “Towards a sky after the rain where the heavy rain has stopped pouring”. I didn’t like this, so I changed it and made it smaller.
– Second to last stanza: “furitsudzuku” = keep raining; I translated as “endlessly raining” because it sounded better and the meaning is similar.

Foreground Eclipse – A Retrospective: Part 5/5 [final]

FRG05

I was late, but I kept my promise: it’s time for the very last part of Foreground Eclipse’s retrospective (whose title should be something like “The walking dead meets Gordon Ramsay and some japanese music and sh*t”).
We already talked about every album they made, with few exceptions.
This last part will feature the songs I didn’t cover in the previous 4 posts.
Long story short, here’s the list:
– Seated with Liquor (CD), only the songs by FgE
Demo CDs, only the songs which are different in a way or another compared to the others I’ve already talked about
– Extra, meaning tracks by Foreground Eclipse featured in non-fge albums
– Bonus Tracks that I haven’t talked about in the previous posts.
It’s basically the same drill as always, except that this time under each song there will be wrote from which album they come from.
Think of this post as a bonus rather than a final post.
Because I want the 4th one to have the “final post” vibe.

Missing Tracks

The songs on this part will be ordered following the time they came out.
So of course we’ll start with the older ones.
The rating system is the same!

.Alone With You (Dying To See Your Face)
From the album: Foreground Eclipse Demo CD Vol.01
Personal rating: ★★☆☆☆
I think this song needs to be featured in this post even though I’ve talked about it on post #2.
And that’s because I think that the demo CD version of it is at least 100 times better than the one featured in their first CD.
It’s still not something over the standards of FgE, but is surely something that fits better the lyrics / original theme.
The vocals are way better too.
A calming theme such as Green Eyed Jealousy is hard to arrange into something fast-paced and “violent” such as this song’s CD version.
I think this one is more appropriate, while it still isn’t an outstanding arrange.

.Perchance To Dream: Ay, There’s The Rub
Personal rating: ★★★★★
From the album: Foreground Eclipse Demo CD Vol.04
As I stated on the part 2 post, this song’s CD version isn’t a full 5 stars song, because I think they overdid a little bit with the backing track / guitar, ruining a bit this song’s atmosphere.
This version is way more fluid and is a 5 stars song, to me.

.Someday in the Rain
Personal rating: ★★☆☆☆
From the album: 東方夏空翔
This song never featured in a all-FgE album, and I wasn’t aware of it for a long timespan before getting to listen to it.
It’s another arrange from Kogasa’s theme together with UFO’s stage 2 theme, but as much I can’t say I like this song as much as I like other songs by them, I can clearly state that this one is way better than Nooneness from Each and Every word (…).
First of all, the vocals are way cleaner and fits better with the rhythm.
The main bridge of Nooneness isn’t half bad to be honest, but the rest of the song is so dischording it’s hard to listen to, in my opinion.
While this song doesn’t shine, it’s overall very soft and catchy, so it’s easy to listen to, in a certain way.
Also, this is the only Foreground Eclipse song that has been never translated before.
That until tomorrow. That was a spoiler.

.Sleeping Forest
Personal rating: ★★★★★
From the album: Panoram A Note
Another song never featured in a fge-only album, and another song I first listened to way later than it came out.
I think this is the most peaceful song they ever composed.
Its rhythm is very soothing even though it’s a rock song, and, together with Forget Me Not, I think this is the song in which Suzuori‘s talent with bass / guitar is displayed the most.
While I listen to this song, I feel like lying on the grass in the middle of a forest where the sunlight is faint, filtered by the tree branches, and a fresh wind is blowing gently.
It’s amazing.
This song also remembers me of a similar memory I shared with a dear person some years ago.
So of course I love this song because of its feeling and memories I’ve linked to, but I really think it couldn’t have happened if the music itself wasn’t good.
I love the bass lines during the main riffs and the drumsticks are amazing.
It’s really strange, because while the guitar and the drums makes this song really fast-paced and catchy, the result is very calming and atmospheric.
It’s really a shame this never featured in a FgE album, because I really think of it as one of the most beautiful song by the FgE of Suzuori period.

.I Bet You’ll Forget That Even If You Noticed That
Personal rating: ★★★★
From the album: 東方幻奏響UROBOROS ~fANTASIAsPIRALoVERdRIVE~
Nothing much to add from what I’ve said before on part 3, but I think that the version of this song featured on this CD is slightly worse than its first version, fatured on the seventh demo CD.
I think that the synthetizers were a little bit unnecessary.
On another note, this CD version’s guitar are a little bit better and have cooler effects. So it’s kind of a draw to me. 4stars-4stars.

.どらぶ
Personal rating: ★★★☆☆
From the album: Each And Every Word Leaves Me Here Alone
Thinking about it, this track was never translated too. I think that’s mainly because no one could f*cking understand its lyrics.
Anyway, this song is the secret track from Each And Every Word Leaves Me Here Alone and at first I really liked it.
I mean, it’s really short and really differend from the rest of the album, so even if it wasn’t a bonus track it would have felt like one.
This song is also hella fun to play on the bass.
Unrelated to this, I remember 3 years ago when I was playing American Idiot by Green Day with a band live I decided to change that song’s bass line with the one from どらぶ, and turned out it came out pretty good.
Anyway, this song is of course made for fun, but it still is really good in terms of music.
First of all, that’s the first secret track to actually be a song. The other secret tracks from the previous 2 CDs are just talking and won’t be on this part merely because they’re not songs.
Second, because it’s a 100% foreground eclipse song. Songs like this one (or truth ironies or others) which are actually made for fun bring the fge spirit the most, in my opinion.
If you ever find lyrics for it, let me know! I’m dying to read them!

.To The Terminus
Personal rating: ★★★★
From the album: Foreground Eclipse Demo CD Vol.08
This song. Ohh, this song. For some reason it’s a song that I can’t say I love, but on the other side I forgot about it really easily.
It’s really strange. I tend to forget songs that I don’t like.
And I like this song a lot. I clearly remember I couldn’t stop listening to it when it first came out, but I always end up forgetting about it.
No matter how much I listen to this song, I always get the feeling I’ve already listened to a song like that before.
It sounds so FgE-ish that it feels like something already heard from them.
That’s probably why this song is always overshadowed by something else in my mind.
I like it a lot, but I don’t think I can say this song is something new and original.
I could recognize this song only by its beginning / end.
Also, the Seated with Liquor version of it just adds some screams and instruments now and then, so there’s no need to write about it twice.
This is probably the song by FgE that I can’t clearly think about.

.You May Not Want To Hear This But
Personal rating: ★★★★
From the album: Seated with Liquor
Here we are with Seated with Liquor, a half-fge half-dte album which I loved!
This is the first FgE track featuring in the album, and I like it a lot.
This song follows the style of “I Bet You Forget(…)” both in title and structure, and just like it is really hard to tell which is the original theme from where it comes from.
I don’t know if I like more this or the other, but I can say for sure that I love this song’s vocals and lyrics more than lots of others FgE songs.
It’s probably one of the best FgE songs in terms of vocals in a screamo/metal song.
Expecially the last part, I love it!
There are actually two versions of this song, one of which has been released online and was the off-scream one.
…Never understood why. This song has almost no screams whatsoever, what’s the point of releasing a non-scream version of it?

.When Innocence Is Just A Mask
Personal rating: ★★★☆☆
From the album: Seated with Liquor
It’s a shame a song with a title that awesome isn’t that great. Of course, in my opinion.
The reason being that just like To The Terminus, it’s a pretty normal song that doesn’t add anything to what I expected.
It’s of course fge-ish everywhere, but nothing that can be considered different from other songs we already listened to.
I can’t say I dislike this song, but for some reason I don’t think of it as a particularly remarkable fge song.

.We Cannot Get Out of Here Forever
Personal rating: ★★★★★
From the album: Seated with Liquor
As you probably read on my top 15, you knew this is one of my favourite touhou arrange ever.
And I’m talking about both DtE version of this and the FgE’s cover.
There are some parts that I like more on a version rather than the other and vice versa, but overall I like the version by FgE more because… well, it’s FgE.
I loved this song when it first came out as a DtE song, and I couldn’t believe Foreground Eclipse decided to cover it when I read the tracklist of Seated with Liquor.
What were the odds this would have happened? That’s crazy!
Of course I can’t really describe why I like this song so much in a post called “FgE Retrospective”, being this song not an original FgE song.
But still, I’m really happy they decided to make a cover of it!

.恋のTwinkle☆Dance (SECRET TRACK)
Personal rating: ★★★★★
From the album: Stories That Last Through The Sleepless Nights
On the previous post I wrote that it couldn’t have been a better way to end their final CD than their last track “Storytellers“.
But it’s not like that, actually.
Go back to the time you first listened to this CD.
We had the crossfade and tracklist some time ago before we could actually get to listen to the CD’s contents.
We knew the tracks’ names and how many they were.
So, we listened to the whole CD, from R.U. to Storytellers, knowing that this was going to be their very last track.
And Storytellers is a really touching song both in vocals, rhythm and lyrics, and I don’t think it’s necessary to understand japanese to get that.
And now, with wet eyes, a new song we didn’t know about starts playing. This album’s “SECRET TRACK“.
The song starts off as a silly one, with a bizarre set of lyrics and childish rhythm.
And then we have:
– Amazing guitar tracks
– Out-of-context screamings that somehow fits perfectly
– Merami shouting random things on acid
– Teto chocking on his own screams
– MOTHAFUCKING SOLO OF EPICNESS
– “JA NA!” (See ya!) at the end!
Guys, this is the best track to end Stories that Last Through the Sleepless Nights, in my opinion.
Like I said for どらぶ, silly songs like this one are really fge-ish, and this time we have a better, faster, longer and way more amazing secret track than we ever had before!
Ok, this isn’t an original song too, being an arrange of 恋のTwinkle☆Dance from old Merami’s circle nanafuretto (ななふれっと).
But this again isn’t something bad.
It’s the same circle from where FgE re-arranger The Distant Journey To You, that, as I said on part 1, is probably one of the most important song they ever composed.
And with it, the circle is closed.
Until the day we’ll hear more, if it’ll come.

About this post

It was really fun to write all this 5 posts and to read your opinions.
I really hope you enjoyed reading a little bit my babbling, and that everyone who never listened to Foreground Eclipse before could start doing so.
Bands are like that. Forming and disbanding as the time goes on.
But music never fades away, really.
And neither does the will to do it.
Merami still sing in lots and lots of circles, as you already know.
I really wish Teto will start producing music again, one day. Wether FgE or not, he was a really talented musician, and it’s kind of sad that he’s not publishing anything anymore.
So, never lose hope on music, and keep listening to it.
It’s up to us to keep alive what doesn’t seem to be alive anymore!
Thank you for reading!
And see you tomorrow for a Foreground Eclipse translation post… Ok, you already know what it’s going to be.

Notes:

– 過ぎていく (sugite iku) even if the lyrics clearly say “iku”, it’s actually read as “yuku”. This happens really often.
– There are some stanzas that aren’t complete, because they end with particles such as を. This happens a lot in japanese, so I’ve added the right “missing” verb where they should be.

Requesting a song – The role of the translator

translator

I would like everyone to read this post, because even though I wrote an entire page about how request works, it doesn’t seem anyone understood any of it.
This post will be locked on my twitter account that I suggest you to follow if you want to contact me more directly: @FGRNDNoises
To request a song is an opportunity I give you to read my translation for a song you’d like to read translated in english.
While I don’t claim to be a wonderful translator, I have my years of study on my back, so I can’t say this is something I do just for fun.
Translating requires time, as well as creating a post and manage a wordpress and its horrid interface.
And I’m doing this for free and for everybody.
I’m not expecting anything from anyone and I’m not trying to make anyone feel bad for something they did. I’m not mad to anyone, I just wanted to point some things out.
There are lots of amazing japanese/doujin music translator and I think most of what I’ll write applies to each and everyone of them.

First of all, how to request.
There have been lots of people who requested me a song, and as you read on the previous posts, you should do this under the translation request page (at the bottom of this website) or via twitter or e-mail.
Requesting under another post with a comment is something I don’t like; I found it very disrespectful so avoid doing so.
Being that I’m willing to translate the songs you request me (that means I spend time of my life translating something for you, even though I enjoy doing that) for free and without questioning, I’m not expecting anything if not respect for my rules.
So, you MUST NOT request more than one song per time. I don’t like this. Why? Because the songs won’t run away!
Request me one song and it will be pending with the others, then, after it’s done, you can request me another! Easy, right?
Doing this, you allow more people to request their own song.
And of course this goes without saying, I know who requested me a song before, so of course I give priority to those who never requested anything before!
Being that I don’t have all the spare time I wish I had, I can’t spend much time translating requests, so if there’s only a song it’s pretty doable, but if I have to translate 2 songs in a row because someone requested me a combo of songs… well.
I think I’m going to state this here and now, and take it as a rule (meaning that I’ll say “No” if I have to): You can’t request more than a song per time.

Second, how we (by we I mean us translators) translate.
This is something I’d like to talk about and it’s not refering to anyone in particular.
Translating is something that requires time.
How does it work?
Step one: scans. Scans are .jpg – .png files, and that means we translators CAN’T copy the text and paste it to a .txt file. We have to read it all and figure out every single kanji without mistaking one from another (and it’s something we have to be really careful about, there are tons of similar kanjis like 待持侍詩) and again, we have to write them all down keeping the right spaces, order, kanjis and being careful not to mispell anything.
Step two: romaji. Then, we have to write everything down again in romaji, so any non-japanese speaker will be able to read the kanjis. By these two steps, it means we have to write the whole song’s lyrics TWICE. And sometimes kanjis have special readings that the band / circle / singer / whatever decides by him/her/them/self/selves. Meaning they could write 日 (hi, “Sun”) and making it sound like “太陽” (taiyou, “Sun”). So, it basically means that after we are done with romaji, we have to listen carefully to the song to check out if everything’s all right and goes along with what we just wrote before.
Step three: figuring out. We then translate stanza by stanza the whole song, and that means we first have to figure out what the song’s about contestualizing it. After that, we analyze its grammar structure and try to convery the same meaning with a similar structure in english. If something is unclear or changes dramatically from jp to eng, we have to write it down in the notes, so a reader will find a valid explaination of why we made a certain choice.
Step four: adjustments. Of course translating the whole song at first is something that can also feature a margin of error, of mispell, and an improper use of words instead of others. So, once we’re done translating, we have to make a review of what we just wrote, and that basically means to read everything again and try to fix what doesn’t sound right or what we could make sound better.
Step five: posting. Posting isn’t as rapid as you may think. You know this wordpress and you know I like to give a shape to my posts, always writing something both above my posts or your requests. Than, there are colors, links, credits, pictures. And that means to use html codes, to find the right picture and to connect each attachment to the right link. It sure doesn’t take much time compared to the previous steps, but is still something you don’t do in a bunch of seconds.
Why writing all of this? Because I think that translating is something that people tends to belittle a lot.
And why I think so? Let me explain.

Third, sharing a translation.
I really apreciate when someone uses one of my translations for their music videos on youtube.
I always add them on my playlist as long as they credit me.
But two things, here.
First being the whole “crediting” thing. I’m not asking much, as long as someone in the video description states “translated by Shion” or something like that with a link to my wordpress, I’m totally fine with it.
But once happened that someone used my translation for a touhou lyric video (it was a translation of 私達の真実~The Battlefield Flower) without crediting me, and when I told him/her (note: very politely!) to at least credit my work by simply adding a link to the description, he/she removed the lyrics and the video itself.
That made me feel… I don’t know. Disrespected? He/She could have just added “visit foregroundnoises.wordpress.com” and keep the video, but he/she didn’t. It was awful.
And here’s another thing I’d like to talk about.
Uploading music.
It’s true that if wasn’t for youtube or sites like this one I wouldn’t had the chance to listen to lots of artists / music, but never forget that uploading music without the author’s approval isn’t something admirable.
I really respect people who adds karaoke subs or lyrics like that, and that sure is something that takes time, but I always get a strange feeling when I see channels getting tons of views / subs / comments and praise for their videos which feature my translations while my work is completely overshadowed.
Uploading a song on youtube is something anyone could do. And I think translating a song isn’t.
And now I sound like a presumptuous prick, but I don’t think there is a translator which haven’t feel like that. And giving that no one reads descriptions… wouldn’t be better if, just for a half second, that “translation by…” thing appear in the video as a subtitle file? No? Mh.
But again, I’m totally fine with it as long as I’m credited, even in the description.
And of course I really apreciate when someone uploads a video featuring my translations, I just don’t understand why the users don’t care about who translated the song instead of who uploaded it.

That’s all I had to say.
I’ll keep on getting requests, don’t worry.
But I already know that in the future I won’t have lots of time for this wordpress, and if I ever have to feel like my works are disrespected or used improperly, then there goes my will to accepting more translations requests.
I’m sorry if this post was more serious than any other posts, but I think it’s necessary to clear up things by now, since it’s been almost a year.
Thank you for reading and don’t feel accused by my words, for all of this is not pointed to anyone in particular.

[REQUEST] セブンスヘブンMAXION – いつかみた夢

【Requested by DT

So, this is actually an arrange from Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream‘s staff roll theme.
Nothing could be more underground than this!
These kind of PC-98 arranges always seem like an ending.
Whenever I think about touhou, I always remember EoSD onwards before PC-98, and that’s pretty sad.
It’s pretty sad how lots of things have been forgotten.
Not by fans, not by ZUN, but by touhou itself. Characters that disappeared, things that happened that no one seems to recollect or spend a word about.
It’s… sad, I guess.
I love the content for this lyrics. The link between dream and reality is something amazing in which I firmly believe, so I found this song to be really interesting in lots of sections.

Countless pillars are sustaining you
But their shape and size is all scattered up
Between those pillars, a butterfly is fluttering as it dances
And in the end, it finally reached you
Space, time and dreams cross the last stop

tsutawaru taion kore wa genjitsu

Come on, go beyond the concept of “body” and “soul”
Because I can get a glimpse of the world of tomorrow!
Just leave behind your anxieties and fears
Because can’t you see? The yet-to-see world is so warm!
Hold my back, because I don’t have any wings,
This body temperature I can feel… this is reality!

私を支える このいくつもの
温かな手を ずっと離さない

watashi o sasaeru kono ikutsu mo no
atatakana te o zutto hanasanai

Sustain me, and don’t ever let go
Of those countless warm hands

Notes:

– WE FOUND IT, GUYS! The first song where 運命 is read as “unmei” and not as “sadame”!! WE MADE IT!!
– Third stanza “kokoro to karada hora koeteku” simpler version would be just “overcome your heart and body”, but here “kokoro” is not “heart”, and I think my translation fits better with the context.
